Looking for recommendations for a longboard type SUP for me for smaller fat days. Been surfing for years, SUP for a couple now - (love my Surfshapes 8' in surf), but wanting something I can ride like my longboard - bit of cross stepping (and shuffling, lol) and nose riding, manoeuvrable. I weigh 52kg so need something light w lower volumes than the big brands that I've seen mentioned here.
thanks, Karen

Have a try on a big guy longboard with flat rocker, belly and 50/50 rail.
This is just a cheap idea

Do have a look at the board...the JL striker 8 11. It is about 8.5 kg or so .....so quite light and true longboard shape...thinned out tail and nose. At your weight there are few small longboard shapes around I guess. I think Surftech do a 9 6 Generator with bamboo and JP do longboard type all rounders which are smaller but most of these tend to be crossover boards rather than a real longboard shape.

Kami has the right idea, at 50kg you would be better on a big mal, when my kids were smaller (40kg) they would paddle my 8' minimal round with an old canoe paddle no trouble at all, you will be lucky to find a longboard style SUP smaller enough.

Nice idea but I am guessing Karen is a wee lass....she would have difficulty carrying a big mal...one big enough to use as a SUP. To get a mal wide enough to SUP with some stability it would be a long beast and heavy and no handle.

one idea....go custom...if you can't find one made by main manufacturers.

If I was 52kgs, I'd demo a Jimmy Lewis Flyweight. It's 8' x 26" x 3.5" and 87 litres. Could be perfect for you. If you want something longer then JL's 8'11 Striker or Laird's 9' Surfer would be excellent choices. Though, your height could be a factor. The Striker and the Surfer are 3 inches wider than the flyweight.

thanks for the ideas. I tried a modern 10'6" mal - it's just too tippy to just stand around on and a bitch to carry down the beach as it is for me. I like the look of the Jimmy Lewis black and blue and the Sunova shapes - want a true long board shape with some length. Good to know they are making them for us smaller types :)

watch out for the jimmy black and blue if you want an all-arounder-type LB. cool as it is, it's made for one thing only, noseriding. 50/50 rails **all** the way around and with a huge scooped nose. the board cannot be ridden/turned from the middle. as jimmy explained to me while i was trying to figure the thing out: after take off, take one step back to the tail to turn -- generally speaking, a big pivot turn -- then take two steps (or more) forward to the front third of the board and ride the wave from there. stop anywhere in the middle and the thing will bog down and come to a complete stop. very very very old school board. myself, i love it one day and have a terrible time on it the next. it's a unique experience, that's for sure. overall, i kinda dig it.

I have a Laird Hybrid bamboo deck. The constructoin has turned out to be an absolute let-down. Everything from the usual heel dents to the blank being soft bubbly foam, delamination adjacent a rail compresson, the worm screws in the fin box stripping, tail dinging from the legrope and the final straw the vent value falling apart and the tail filling with water! Real pity as the 9' Surfer might be perfect?

If you want something you can surf with style that will last, a better board would be the 9' Surftech Laguna Bay. Compared to most other productions boards they are nice and narrow, so would suit your wieght. I have done everything to kill my old Surftech and it is still ridable.

thanks for the feedback on the Black and Blue, Linter. It's your fault that I started this search in the first place ;) I'd been thinking about it for awhile, then saw your post a couple months ago with a nice little vid of Kristy, stylin' on a longboard shaped SUP. But couldn't find anything here that wasn't huge.
Nice vid Dogman. I like the look of this board too and it sounds like its pretty durable (will it make me surf like you too? ;). Got some good leads, now need to go and demo. Cheers, karen

damn, dogman, you got more style in your shuffle than i do in my x-step. very very nice. btw/ are you using the new soloshot? if so, how do you like it?
karen: good luck in your hunt. i still watch that kristy murphy video from time to time; such a nice, easy flow to her surfing.

Haven't tried it yet, but on the spec sheet the Sunova Style 9'6 x 27 1/2 @112l should be a pretty good longboard style SUP board.
It's narrow, thin, and kind of low volume for it's size.

I'd love to try one, but currently there's only a 10' x 30 1/2 available for demo here in Portuga!!!

Try to demo one. It should be easier in Australia where you have a lot of boards and BIG SUP shops with a lot of demo boards...

Surfershane - Good info on the bamboo construction. I had a firefish in the EPS which was the worst quality board EVAH! My assumption was the bamboo would be better. Doesn't sound like it..

Too bad because the 9' Hybrid is 105 liters and would be great for a very lightweight lady!

Shaped and produced by a true longboarder - in skill and at heart! Mind you, Bert Burger seems to put out more than just spectacular longboards and longboard sups!

Hi, I also would recommend a normal mal. Try to get the widest one possible (24"+) with enough volume (at least 75l). A modern construction tough and light would be best

For instance: http://www.surftech.com/surf/mickey-munoz-ultra-glide-tlpc www.surftech.com/surf/mickey-munoz-super-glide-tlpc www.surftech.com/surf/surftech-big-rig-hd-e www.bicsportsurfboards.com/products/performer-surf,3,65/9-6-big-boy-longboard,1055.html www.bicsportsurfboards.com/products/superfrog,3,99/10-0-longboard-cruiser-superfrog,1213.html

For the handle, a good trick is to have a leash plug drilled near the rail, and put a strap in it. Cheap to do, and less risks of leakage than with a regular handle...

For long walk, just fasten the leash in it and use the leash cuff as a comfy handle.
