Yesterday my leash was pulled off. Yes , i got on the wrong side of a wave and board was on other side. End result my leash was ripped off my ankle. There is virtually no give in the 10mm Balin Stormrider I am using. The Velcro must have parted and this proved to be the case, when I checked it when I got my board back and no damage to leash swivel etc.

I think its because I can't get it wrapped around my ankle enough due to 3mm wetsuit plus 3 mm booties (yes it gets cold in Dunedin) plus my chunky leg. I might get some more 50mm wide velcro and stitch onto existing leash so I can get at least 90% contact between the hooks side and the loop side(I had to google the terminology)

Any advice on this would be appreciated :-)

Make sure you squeeze the velcro tightly together - then you should be good. Has happened to most....

Leash over your booty , then pull wetsuit leg down over top of leash . Works for me

maybe a knee style leash worn on your ankle instead? should give you the circumference ( spelling?)

I had the same legy pull off yesterday and it's brand new only 3 surfs old, washed after each surf too.
It was only small in Sydney yesterday.
The only thing I thought of was my one it's the cyclone balin legy it is so thick it doesn't have any sretch.
I am trying this legy out for bigger surf so was not happy that it pulled off my leg.
I was thinking of going to get my money back as it was a $50 legy

That isnt cold Needing a 3mm wetsuits and boots is for me most of the time summer conditions, In winter I need a 6/4mm hooded suit, 5mm boots and often even gloves....Are you sure the Velcro was squeezed together? Even a little of Velcro take a huge load, too much Velcroleft over makes it prone to tear them lose.

thanks for the replies. I didn't really squeeze both bits together but I wrapped it tightly and it was clean. I guess i'm a little concerned that either its impossible to release my leash if I need to , or , it released by itself exactly when I don't want it to. I was thinking I was twisting it or rubbing it against the board when i was climbing back on after falling in and that might have made it release?

I have tried to put under my wetsuit. I will try this again and ensure I press both sides together.

I still think I need to add some more Vecro so I can completely join the outside bit to the inside bit. I can try and always just cutoff if it doesn't help.

I can't help how big my ankles are :-)

Have you thought of getting a knee cuff and swapping it over? If you buy another one, or a similar one, you can undo the little Alan-key bolt that goes throu the swivel and mix n match ankle or knee cuffs to suit. That way you will still have 2 leggies. Most of them are pretty close to interchangeable, and the same brand should do it as a matter of course.

if that's Greek am happy to explain further....

Don't forget to close velcro when not in use to keep it working well for longer. The little hooks will wear down in time if left catching on other stuff.
