Not really been an issue for me over the last few months as the surf has been hopelessly small.......but when it picks up the old question of best practice when exiting a wave on a SUP keeps coming back to me.

When the waves are small I usually either jump over the back of the wave when it starts to close or ride it further and see what happens......or simply ride over the back of it before it spits me off.

When it comes to the bigger stuff I try to ride over the back before it closes out but on beachbreaks that doesn't always happen and tend to see how it goes

Is there a good discipline to get into? eg straightening up then bailing.....trying to dive through the wave (not good on powerful stuff I imagine.)

What do you do?

Start in the small stuff always complete the wave , pull off stay on your feet and paddle away. When you want to crack the lip to pull off drive the nose to the lip don't point it , by that I mean drive off your back foot try and get the board to the rail. Bend your knees and crack through , when you get it right you pull off with heaps of speed and it's really fun surfing down the back of the wave heading back out to sea. It's just practice , you'll get smashed a few times but it's all fun.

Agree with Piros...depends on the wave. If it has an exit - take it with speed and hold your feet. If it's a crasher - ride it as far as you can, try for a barrel and wipe out sensationally.

Yeah thats always the first option Victory or Death........make sure there is a camera around.

+1, unless it's a really juicy lip.

I ride a persistent right hander and I'm goofy so getting off the wave in a hurry is not usually an option. So it's death or glory but it's so good to come out the other end when you make it otherwise there are no happy endings. Or just bail early but there is no fun in that.

Took the glory road today in the beach barrell! First time ever had the feet move sideways past me and over the top!
Lots of fun, other than that any old way will do. As long as you are having a BLAST in the water.

I ended up with the near death option, a torn MCL and torn ACL, will be out for 9 months!

However I will always go for the death or glory option, go hard or go home!
