So I left my Ke Nalu Wiki paddle in the car park at Marcus Beach (Sunshine Coast) yesterday, and not surprisingly it wasn't there when I went back today. If any one finds it please let me know. It was a bit beaten up, and the blade had a lot of silver duct tape around it. Anyway, it looks like I need a new paddle. I was going to order the same again, but Ke Nalu seems to have released a new blade - the Ho'oloa, which is presumably even better, but I can't decide if I should get the small or large. It's for surfing only, but with a relatively long elite 90 shaft (6" overhead - yes, I know). I'm 6'1 and 84kg. Any advice?
The Ho'oloa blades have a different action to the Elites. Softer catch but a longer and (much) stronger power phase. Tons of power and they call for a bit different stroke action to get the best out of them. The larger size Ho'oloa blade is a bit of a beast IMO (but I've only tried it with a 100 flex shaft). At 84 kg and if you liked your Wiki you'd be happier with the smaller one, both Ho'oloa blades feel like roughly a size up from the elites, for the same area. You should try to hunt up a demo before deciding.
HC was spot on with what he said. Comparing size for size, the small Ho'oloa has a softer catch than the Wiki but provides more drive through the stroke. There are some crew out there that have recently acquired a small Ho'oloa for surfing but I personally prefer the Wiki for surfing as the powerful catch is great for a few quick taps to get you into a wave. The most suitable blade for you will depend on your technique....if you go for the long power strokes the Ho'oloa might be more suitable. There is also a small Wiki (74sq") on the way....should be available late May / early June
