My first build using Kokoda 3.7mm ply, built from plans and a lot more hours than the 40 quoted. It's been fun though is a little heavier than I hoped at 20Kg.
Water test to come.

The water test went really well, I was very surprised by the board's stability and glide. It turns wells when you step right back, couldn't go too far as the rear end is slippery as.. I did a good time keeping up with my paddling buddies. The weight is an issue and needs be cut down by a few kilos. I did all I could by drilling out excess wood, using western red cedar in a few places. The real weight seems to be the glassing and inside the fillets on all panels to seal.

How much money do you think you spent on the project?

Basic costs:
Plans were about $85 from CLC boats, deck pad $100, ply about $120, epoxy and cloth the most at about $280.
Extras: finbox, fin, lease plug and goretex vent about $160.
Then the tools, sandpaper and time!

Bamboo veneer is cool. Where did you get the deck pad?

How do you find the turning and tracking with your fin setup?

Think they're in Melbourne also, very good service also. They have a wood look also. Probably in hindsight, I'd put a very small pad down where you stand and monster grip spray the rest to save weight and for the look of the veneer.
It has a large 10' axe fin in a finbox and tracks very well.

Good work to everyone who has done one. They all look great!

My 2 cents worth, it would be tempting to run those "under feet stringers" backwards for that next full bay.

Also, has anyone tried to get in contact with Starboard, to try and get their "Floor Board Grip"? The "Fisherman Grip" would look very cool on these boards....

Hey guys,

Love the work, I been thinking of making one for ages, maybe this winter I will tackle it.

What do you guys think of the boards, which size to go for and the weight? I want to mainly use it for training and fitness but would like to be able to catch runs with it so maybe the 14 foot is the way to go.

Are the plans detailed enough and do they offer options on keeping the weight down. I have been thinking of using the thinness ply wood and laminating fibre glass on both sides prior to assembling.

For my next build I'd go 2mm ply and not as wide with less rocker, maybe a 12'6" flat water racer. The plans are certainly detailed enough, just mark the plan outline onto the boards and cut and assemble. Just youtube "Kaholo" for examples or look here:

To keep weight down, I will just seal the insides with a wood sealer or varnish. The epoxy and glass on the outside isn't even required, but it will keep it from dings and add strength. Under where you stand could do with glassing for strength.
Think the Naish 12'6" would be an ideal template for a board, but would have a recessed deck.
