Hey guys,

Great forum, i have been browsing through for a while now, and love the positive attitudes from everyone here.

I'm after a bit of advice if at all possible. I'm currently riding a 2013 JP Fusion 9'8". Im 178cm and about 82kgs.

The problem is, while i love the board and think it is fantastic, i also struggle a bit to catch waves and find it a bit tippy at times. Now i know this also could relate to the fact that i dont take it out anywhere near as much as i would like. Most arvos and weekends are spent running my daughter around to dance classes and eisteddfods around the state.

I have thought of possibly moving onto a bigger board, around 10'6", and possibly a Naish as i have had success on them when having a go when i first started out.

A mate has also recommended a Fanatic All Wave in a similar size to the JP as he has said it would be a much easier ride.

Was also thinking of possibly trading the JP in for a downwinder possibly in the 14' range, so that if its flat, i will be more likely to get out and have a paddle around anyway.

All in all, im just looking for a bit of advice from different people with different views to see if i can enjoy my time out on the water a little more.

Thanks!

ive got the 9.8 cabrihna which became the jp fusion. Its a really nice board and generally pretty stable. The stepped rails take a little getting used to and at my weight 106 kg i can bury them if im too far forward on the nose, but at 82 kg you shouldnt have a problem there. if youre struggling to catch waves and find the jp tippy then id very strongly suggest the 9.6 or new 9.5 allwave. they are very stable for their length catch waves really early and surf pretty well for their volume. there are plenty of short wide boards around now that are surf oriented but if you find the jp tippy id stay clear of anything under 9.6. the other option is to trade up to the 10.2 or 10.8 jp fusion, ive got the 10.8 and its about as stable as an aircraft carrier but is really way too big for you, the 10.2 fusion may be the go though. the 10 foot naish mana is also super stable and catches waves well.

Thanks! Exactly the sort of advice I was chasing...

It seems I have my good days and my bad, and I guess not taking it out as often as I should may also exaggerate my problems...

Thanks for the advice

Howdy, interesting you find the fusion tippy at 31 " WIDE> I have the Surf Wide body 8 8 AT 32 " wide body and find it super stable .

I came down from a Fanatic all wave 9 6 2013 model, that has the same stability but nowhere near the manoeuvrability. My wife now uses the Fanatic, loves it. Basically, I suggest as usual. 1) if you have the fusion stick with it and get the hours in to improve technique.
2) If it feels off and you just can't get the hang of it, demo, 3) demo, 4) demo! The best part of SUP is the demo of new boards then go with what your feet tell you.

Conditions do vary, and some days are easier than others. But a demo over a week or two in the surf not flat water Is the best way I can suggest forward.

Hey JB stick with it...........paddle it more

Most of my mates are selling their Allwaves and buying JPs and keeping them (or at least keeping the same brand) so thats gotta say something.

Personally I had a 10'8, then progressed to a 10'2 and now have same as you. And yes on the 9'8 I am struggling to get onto a lot of waves, i think you have to commit your weight forward on the takeoff and move back, it does like a late takeoff tho.

Its putting time on the water in all conditions.

and for the record i am 110 kgs and find it actually quite stable

The 10'6 Naish is a great board, my GF has one but doesnt have the drive and buzz on a wave they are chalk and cheese.............

Persistence and Patience

Taking my own advice too

Hey guys,

Really appreciate all the feedback you have given. I think my problem was it wa a super choppy day with swell coming from every direction, got disheartened and tried to blame my board. I know the board has been getting great feedback from everything I've read, so as you both suggested, and I think I already knew, I'll just have to get out there a lot more and enjoy the learning curve...

Thanks again guys, really appreciate the feedback
