Two awesome boards. Great quality construction, light (12'6 around 8,2 kg depending on the volume; 14'0 around 9 kgs depending on the volume), stable and with proven performance.

Both boards perform well in all conditions, with the Blackfish more suitable for someone who paddles more on the ocean and the Whiplash for someone who paddles more in flatwater. But there are people who prefer the Whiplash even on ocean conditions and the Blackfish on flatwater.

You can check Dave Boehne giving a complete explanation on the Whiplash:
and on the Blackfish:

I've ordered the Blackfish 14'0 x 25'' and I will use it mostly on the ocean (beach race and some downwind) but also on some flatwater events. But I wouldnt mind having a Whiplash

Hope it helps!

Interesting, is that include the carbon under or top. I guess all that carbon wrap would be enough Krist?

Some boards use a pine panel in the standing area Jeg to stop heal dents from tubs like myself or even a knee

From some discussions, it could be that the 2017 Blackfish shape standard or with custom nose would bridge the gap between the previous years Whiplash and Blackfish with a slightly lower rocker line that should improve flat water speed some. I could consider replacing my two 2015 Blackfish (24" and 26") for a 2017 24" if money was no object.

Thanks LucBenac that's the kind of feedback I am after . Having been a smoker for 30 years and a hater of all things cardio I like a board with a bit of glide rather then high cadence although from what I have heard the blackfish with its big concaved tail ( like the allstar /sprint) gets up on the plane and uses high cadence to keep it there ?

Yes that is correct. It is not a typical displacement board on flat water. You feel it only on flat, as soon as there are bumps then it feels more like the reverse i.e. it needs less effort to move in through the chop than a displacement would.
The 2017 design could make the flat water aspect closer to a usual board.
When sprinting it is one of the fastest board BTW.

Videos are 2016. Construction, I do not know if there will be any changes in 2017. I am not associated with teh brand in anyway, other than liking their products.

for 2017 more rounder & volume on the nose for better flat water glide.

Looks like no more 26 width and been replace by 25 width (23,25 & 27). I think starboard brand model allstar need to fill the gap between widths of 24.5 & 27 (23,24.5,27 & 28).

Has anyone had the chance to try the 2017 Inifinty production Whiplash or Blackfish? Looking to move from 12'6" to 14' this year. Generally race large inland lakes with 10-20 mph winds/waves here in the midwest US.
