Good day to all!

Just wondering how long can you keep a SUP board? Provided you use twice per week..average week end warrior waves ( not pipeline or puerto escondito!)..provided you store it in a cool dry place..rince it everytime you use it...repair every ding you may have.. never expose it to sun for long per5 years? 10? 20 ?

I know its more theorical than anything else and depend of the brand,manufacturing process..luck....but curious thats all!

We still have some of the original run Naish Nalus, so they are like 12 years old now. Had to make repairs over the years, but we still use them as loaners. Newer boards are better constructed. On a surf sup you might get to the point where the board doesn't flex right after a while, but a cruiser for mellow waves could last a lifetime if you wanted.

I have starboard wave and raceboards from 7y and still going strong, both carbon and glass models.Naish are in general lasting a bit shorter and seem to be more fragile to me, most of the naishes I owned are done in less then 2 years.Gong makes nice shapes but are too fragile for me, at least the models till 3y ago. In the end, most damage happens to me during transporting and noton the water, so buying a proper boardbag might extend the life of your board.

guys, im talking about fatal damage to a board rendering it unusable ! ( broken in two, or bubbling out? or any structural effect due to the material of the board aging etc..) not small dings!

The reason why these sup products dont last as long because apparently its good business practice for a cheap brands and some big brands to make crappy products.

Just put a small ding in my 8.5 sunnova speed ! Not happy but probs close to 300+ surfs i have been very happy with the contruction of the sunnovas !!!

I've had two starboard that have never needed a repair over the course of 7 years, even after years of being slung around by newbies. I have very old Naishs that have needed repairs, but aren't dead by any means. My Sunova Speeed didn't hold up to that kind of abuse, its dings pretty easily and is starting to feel a little noodley after three seasons, but its hardly dead. I've snapped one PSH gun in big surf and decided it was dead, but thats the only one for me. It takes a lot to render a sup unusable, even if it doesn't stay 'good as new' for very long.

If you think about it though... If you use your sup twice a week for two years. Your average sup only costs you $10 a session to have a few hours of fun.

I was hooked on EPS+epoxy surfboards as soon as I could get them. I got my first epoxy board (Gerard Dabbadie Superfrog) 25 years ago, splitted the rail on the first session (I was too eager to test it, toyed with the shorebreak...), but it didn't get a ding nor pressure dents after that (I used a pad, no wax). Apart being yellowed, it was nearly as new when I sold it recently (sold all my prone quiver, bad hips means SUP only for me now).

So I would say at least 30 years, easily.

This said, making boards is still a manual process, some boards can be badly made (rails oversanded, bad epoxy batch, laminated with too much humidity), but if it doesn't seem to ding easily in the first months of use, you should be able to keep it a very long time, even all your life.

I have actually kept track of my use and costs (boards, leashes, wetsuits , rail tape, bags, accessories, racks, tie downs, surfears, but not petrol costs).
Average about $45 per SUP at moment . If I sold a few I could bring that into the thirties . Regardless still totally worth it. Costs $50 to hire a board and their usually old and heavy and a hassle time wise and not readily available .

Started Sup 7 years ago on new epoxy NSP 10'2, next year got exdemo 2 year-old Starby 9'5 . Still solid n sound. Let them go last year to down size /lower volume. Go with good wash n store dry. ENJOY

I broke my Fanatic Fly HRS10.6 within 2 years, that was my first board. Used it also in waves of course. Also deck and rail damage to that one.
JP FUSION 9.8 after that stayed very well. No repairs in 4 years.
homecooked mob 8.3 now 3 years with many small repairs and now soaking up water in the tail. Now finished for serious waveriding. I had to do full deck repair. But still good value for money.
Gong Curve pro now 2 years, with 1st year 6 repairs on bottom and rails, but 2nd year no more issues. Deck still rock solid and i guess 3-4 more years possible.
now new Gong fsp coming, i expect that to last at least 5 years easily without repairs :)

What an interesting cost analysis! Never thought about it that way. With three boards, three wetsuits, leashes, helmet, impact vests, board bags and booties I would be close to $30/surf and that is surfing 100X per year.......I have always rationalized that the surfing was "free".......now that illusion has been soundly dispelled!

if thats the case Sunova .10 years .. ...

i have messed up plenty naish board ,sold them off
but i still see the people i sold them to using them ..sure not pretty
but still giving them some joy ..and thats 4-5 years ago .

Using this formula it is pretty easy to make surfing cheaper, just surf more. Win win

As you get older time and experience is a higher priority than money .
The clock is ticking ....every weekend counts
