Hi everyone,

I want to get rid of my Gong Mob 8'3 sup and buy the HN.
Need some advice about those 2 boards because they have similar volume but not the size.
Mostly for surfing small waves, rare waves of 3ft. Usually 1-2ft waves, windy. Local conditions are not perfect
I'm 1.93cm tall, 80kg, i'm very stable with the Gong Mob 133lt(think so) and need to upgrade it for the surf because of deck issues.
Which one do you think is better?

Specs:
8'0" 31.5" 4.1" 21.4" 133 L
8'6" 31.5" 3.9" 21.5" 132 L

Have you tried the Hokua x32 , the 88 is magic , not sure about the the 83 but I didn,t like the 91 or 7 10 , I am a similar size as you.

i'm 90 kgs and ride the 8'0" HN in all conditions. board is fast and very stable. i could actually go 7'8" HN. I've heard some say the 8'6" is a bit better board for surfing (maybe slightly thinner rails account for this), but i've never tried and am completely content with the 8.

Thanks, actually i have an opportunity to test the 8'6 in this weekend, but not the 8'0. I really want to know which one handle 1-3ft better.

I demoed both boards but not back-to-back and believe it or not, I liked the 8'6" better. For what it is worth, the length-to-width ratio between the 8'6 just seemed nicer to me than the 8'0 which kind of felt like I was surfing a dinner plate. All that being said, I am about your weight at 85Kgs and believe that if I were to buy a Hypernut I would go smaller than the 8'0 to possibly the 7'8" or smaller as the 8'6 has a lot of volume. A friend of mind bought the 7'2 and I am going to try it out at some point. Hope this helps--I am sure that others that have more miles on the board will chime in.

I'm 78kg and have ridden both boards, I also find that the 8'6 is a better board as it is a more recent release.

They thinned out the rails and pulled in the tail a bit making the board transition from rail to rail easier for a lighter weight rider. I also find that the 8'6 length has that little bit more glide and easier to paddle onto a wave.

It's not really the best size for our weight range but between the two sizes I think the better board.

The 7'8 is way too small for me now, probably surf better but with my height and wind I'll be like a sail on it. It will take more effort to keep me on place then manage to be on the right position to catch the waves.

By the way, is there another board in SB range which can fit?

I am sure that Marco can give you better guidance as my quiver is mostly Laird SUPs and I do not yet have a Starboard--though I suspect I will buy a Hypernut for foiling at some point. Starboard's construction cannot be beat. For a small board, I hear that the Hypernut you are looking at works well in small or big conditions. If you want something different, for the conditions that you mention, I tend to lean towards Longboard-style SUPs in the 9/9'6 range as the glide tends to help make for a lot of fun. Have you thought of the 9'5 or 9'0 Nut?

The Nut 9'5 and 9'0 are too big to store in place now. Have a wall mount up to 8'8

From the other Hypernut thread that Marco responded to, it seems that my decision will be the 8'0 or 7'4 Hypernut as these will come with a Tuttle-box for a foil in their 2018 models. My main question for myself will be do I want to challenge myself with balance on the lower volume 7'4. Will look forward to hearing how your demo goes and what you decide.

Yeah, same happend to me in Brazil, met people all over the world in the lineup.
I'm interesting with surf now mpre then Foil, although it's looks fun and challenging.
I will try the 8'6 on Saturday and decide which one.
Hope to make the right decision while purchasing the board.

Ok, just got the 8'6 HN and test it in a 1ft waves and 10 knots wind.
First impressions: The board is stable, very stable. Easy to move and glide really smooth.
After a couple of minutes of getting know each other i tried to catch some waves, damn this board is fast.
You need to be in the right spot, catch the waves like Colas explained in half surf stand, paddle fast and then WOW!
Freakin' WOW! it's move like a short SUP, fast and responsive.
I will test it again this weeks when we will get some waves here.
