I recently posted about going down 25l to a 82l nsp sup and how interesting it was to try something at that volume. Volume on boards is such a unique topic, I hope the below opens some conversations.
I have wanted a JL stungun for a long time, but they're hard to find over here and always thought the 99l 8'2 would be too small. So I brought the 107l smik v3 spitty last year. Then popped up the 7'8 x 82l nsp to throw in the mix. Then a dude was selling his JL SG 8'2 and just couldn't resist buying for a try! After doing my last surf on the nsp, it was CRAZY at how much my balance had progressed onwards. Jumping on the JL 8'2 was so corky and tippy, a challenge! Really surprised me. The JL also felt thick, which again is interesting as it was very advanced when launched with thin rails and tail.
I got them all out to compare before- again really interesting. I don't know how the Smik is 8l more volume when you can see the tail is more thinned, it's wider at 29" and looks a touch more pointed. The nsp is the thinnest by a long way throughout the board, but in the tail i think the Smik is a touch thinner. Pretty even though.
Bottom concaves are slightly different. JL is flat with a very light vee in the back of the fins. Spitfire is single to double to more pronounced vee further forward. Nsp is similar, probably more vee and forward than the Smik.
The tail on the Smik looks a touch more pulled in too.
i managed to take the JL out in some juice the other day, maybe 1.5x Oh and quite heavy. Not sure on the fin combo but it didn't feel as agile like the Smik or nsp, but did hold a really long drawn out arc nicely without lifting whereas I feel sometimes I have too much speed in the smik.
Really not sure what to do with my board collection now or which to keep or sell.
