Hi all

I have an 8"10 flow with original fins tried both as thruster and quad.
I'm interested in what other fin setups work for the flow to loosen it up a bit but still able to lay into some turns.
Surf anything from waist to over head waves.

Thanks.

Try thruster with a much smaller centre fin...
If you use 5" sides, Try a 4" or 3.75" in the centre...

Should loosen it up nicely

I ride my 8'7" Flow both as a thruster and quad, and find that in both cases the key is the smaller trailing fins. 3.5" to 3.75" trailing fins work well for me (75 kilos). Fronts are usually around 4.75".

Thanks all, looks as though the key is the smaller trailing fins.
Looking forward to trialling both quad setup but the thruster with smaller centre fin sounds like fun too.

Troy's easy to deal with.
I use XL fronts and medium rears on all of my fat arse boards. Works a treat. Drive off the bottom. Loose fun off the top.

Note that if you cannot find C-Drives, a substitute is to get fins with a long base and narrow tip, there are some in the market.

I recently bought an 8'1" Flow and the standard fins look huge. I put some Jackson Close in the front and medium C Drives in the rear and felt much better. Contacted Troy and he had a set of XS rear quads so I bought those.

Wow! they look massive!

Nice to see the thread back live...

I have since been using my Flow 8'7 in Thruster, I bought the FCS PCC7's as a Quad setup (pic up there^^) and surfed it using that setup up until recently when I've changed to a Thruster.. same fins (the FCS pack came with a rear fin as well) and have to say it's really loosened up the tail.
I got some advice off here about changing to a Thruster, but I wanted to scope out the Quad setup first, now that I'm happy how that set up works I'm now diving into Thruster..
So far I've found the tail has become lighter and more responsive, I've had to change my rear foot pressure a lot because as the Quad had lots of drive the Thruster has lots of looser movement. Where the Quad would provide drive and carved bottom turns, the Thruster now needs just a tiny bit more paddle to get it to go but then it's like a skateboard.. super slashy and really thats how i surf.. So far I've only had it in chest high onshore breaks, but I'm looking forward to taking it out in cross/on chop and some shoulder/head high curl..

All good, and it's all down to the advice on here so thanks Chaps.

How to compliment an already great board.....all you need is a 100kegs on top to hold it all together.

make sure your front fins are as big as you can go - you might not even need a centre then ,esp in smaller waves

I tried all sorts of combo s on my 130 flow ...and the less expensive combo ended up being the best of all .thanks to talking to that guy .
the large 105 original fins plus a 2 on the rear ,for smaller waves ...and bigger waves I use the smaller 94 .
I find I can get my 130 vertical with this combo ...it surprised the hell out of me ,I' m now loving this board ,as it catches waves from way back ...it's my snake machine ...the proners love me even more ......

ive kept the 8'7 with medium quads ...

Used to surf an X32 with this set up.
Tried GL1 sides, and one of the GL1 quad rears as a centre fin, on my 8'10" Flow this morning.
Good loose fun.

Nah. Not with over 100kg pinning the poor thing down. Smallish surf with a few hollow waves. Quite loose, but fun. On anything of consequence I would revert back to my c drive quads, or a slightly larger centre.

Cool ....Ive got the 7.0 on each side but have ground my rear fin down to a 3 .and them i use the 2 sometimes to .
i like the stiff glass fins as you can climb the wall fast .
i did have mine as a quad for a while but found it to hard to off load the speed at the top of the wave ..it kept driving through ...not flick it off ,I like a quick snap at the top ..but will give smaller a go too..like yours ..I'm 98 kgs ..I have the standard 130 litre flow ...I like it ...it took some getting use to,the 120 flow is a bit too small for my age my back cant handle it ..I don't fall much on the 130 ..like your gloss finish...next time ..

learnt my lesson today ..in 5 foot on shore surf ..using this combo ...it was like trying to ride a dolphin ..too loose ,could barely stay upright,,,
went in and changed to the quad set up ...fixed the problem straight away ...had a great surf ,then....changed the single rear to 2x 2'' FCS FINS .LIKE RIDING A 4X4 in rough terrain .smooth as silk ...definitely more speed with the quads ..

if it was not as rough i would of used smaller rears ...

changing fins is like having a completely different board
