Hi All, Just received my new 2013 9'6" Allwave, I am sure there was a post about fin positions but i cant find it?

Putting the fin in the front of the box = ?????
Putting the fin all the way back of the box = ?????

also how does the above effect 12'6" and 14' race boards

Cant wait to take the Allwave for a paddle, got a mad deal from bris kites in brisbane $1249 delivered to sydney, they have a bunch of 2013 board discounted ssssoooo tempted by the 2013 14' falcon but the misses already is going to kill me....

It's pretty much the same for all boards..

Forward is looser (turns better) and less good for tracking..

And back is stiffer (turns worse) and better for tracking..

Not much difference in stability IMO.

So what does the big black fin following my board mean?

and I 'm frothing to try this set of AB2 ( I just received it today ) on my 7'11" channels bottom SUP for my next trip to perfect tropical waves of the Northen hemisphere and winter, guess where
But to come back to the thread : I say that center of gravity ( or surface/amount of rake) of fins can change the thing too as John said for position's fins , center of gravity depending of the rake's fin is important as well .
On this particular board 7'11": I like the rear bigger AB2 with more vertical rake fin giving some loose to this tracking, stiffer and secure rear position of the base fin .

: Less rake on the front fins providing some stiffer attitude to the forward and loose position of the base fin high in the channel's rail .

Hi Air
When I first got my 9'6 Allwave, I rode it with the center fin all the way back in the "Thruster" position

I eventually found out that I much preferred it all the way forward in the box. Much looser and still had plenty of punch.

About the middle of the box should be just right. Too far forward is too loose and too far back makes the turns too hard.

Agree with all the above, but the other general rule of thumb is the bigger the surf, the further back you put the fin. 2 footers, nice and forward. 6 ft and slide it aft a bit. Or a lot. Of course this will also depend on the board and the fins you choose.
