Just looking at a new paddle , as allways I have a tight budget weight isn't a issue but strength and price is . Any input would be much appreciated cheers . Right now I am using a carbon with a peice of oak down the shaft just to get out on the water so that's why I say weight isn't a issue

Carbon (without oak down the shaft) is strongest IMO.

I talked to the Fanatic guys about this paddle before recommending it to a friend and they told me they were excellent and pretty bullet proof re breaking.. It's a little flexy for my liking.. btw I'm guessing it's the Fanatic paddle?

This would mean a heavy (at least, not too light) glass fiber paddle.

Carbon is stronger, more expensive, but less durable (sensitive to heat and hard impacts).
Quality of the carbon weave and construction (pre-preg for instance have better strength to weight ratio) is very important, too.

Beware, some brands call a "carbon paddle" paddles with only 5% carbon. boardboy mentioned one that at 750g cannot be 100% carbon, unless being as stiff as a mineshaft (and much more expensive).

A Compromise like 20% carbon and 80% glass could be good for you. Glass should be on the outside to protect from impacts.
