I come from a paddling background but not surf. Not interested in racing - want to have fun and learn how to surf. Just sold Fanatic 14"0 race board (it was too big for me), and not sure where to start. I'm 75kg... (Note: This will be my board however it would be good if my husband could use it as well - he's 100kg)
Those choices are fine for your husband, but horrible for you. Since you have paddling experience, start thinking sub 9' and no wider then 30". You just will not be able to turn a higher volume board that would suit your husband. Do yourself a favor and forget about sharing:) Remember your "it was too big for me" quote? You'll be saying it again if you're serious about those boards.
My wife is 5'2" - 56 kg - and we just bought her a JP surf 9'2" (30") wide. she was a bit worried about the tippiness but has been in the waves twice now and loves it. she is just beyond a beginner in the waves. could have quite easily gone down to the 8'10" (30" wide) but felt the drop from a 10'5" starboard drive was a big enough one. I am 6'2" and 85 kg and can ride the JP 9'2" - a bit tippy but would get used to it. I have the 9'1" x32" Naish Hokua LE - love it.
I tried both allwave and WP9.5 and although I love the luxury look of the Fanatic I found the Starboard the better board. As stable as the Fanatic but waverides way better+got the quad option what loosens it up a lot if you become better. :)
