Hiya

After multiple hours and internet searches I remain bewildered at what may a good choice for me both as a first and hopefully longer term SUP board. I am a competent longboarder and surf a few times a week as long as there's waves. Live near the beach but rivers/canals not really handy although sheltered headlands not far. Until about 2 weeks ago I had no interest in SUP whatsoever but decided on a whim to give it a go on Currumbin Creek when passing through the goldie and now am keen to get one which is the start of the problem.... cos I think I need 3.....Space and finance won't allow that unfortunately so this is why I am seeking some informed advice. It will also be difficult for me to travel to do loads of demos etc so I'm trying to get a shortlist together.

I am about 95kg, 6'2 and like to think I'm reasonably fit for the wrong side of 45. I am looking for a genuine all round board if that exists - ie suits my size, paddles well on a flattish ocean (ie for exercise) and can catch a few waves once I get the standup paddling thing worked out. Would definitely prefer something quality with good resale potential and am inclined to think that bigger may be better for me. The number of different brands and board styles have left me with a headache - apologies for another beginner style post but any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You have no idea what fun lies ahead... enjoy your "Ah ha" moment
No apologies necessary.

2014 Naish Nalu 10'6 x 30 in GS construction

Great all round board:
Easy paddler
Surfs great
Top brand
Great quality
Will grow with you as you progress
VERY popular and long tested = solid resale

Many fine boards out there, but it's a good start.

Thanks for your reply - the Nalu range is one of the directions in which I was heading.

Am I correct in thinking that something like a Naish Glide is not suited to surfing even small stuff?? My longboard brain tells me that this shape would catch an unbroken wave and go straight ok but not sure about control after that?

Any thoughts at all much appreciated.

Man, the Nalu is an excellent choice. As is the Starboard drive.
Both are longboard type SUPs.
Cheers,
Ken.

There are heaps of good boards out there to choose from these days.

I'm also 95kg and 6'4'' and I love my 10'6'' Nalu and it would be a perfect board for you.. IMO.

Second that, both good boards, and if you want to go slightly longer, the Starboard 11'2" Blend could be added to that list too.

Hi felagle.
Do you plan to paddle with a regular group?
If you do, it may be worth getting a similar board to the rest of the group so you can keep up with the pace and activities of the group.

I bought a 126 x 30 'race' board as my first SUP as I paddled in the SUPP (Stand Up Paddle Perth - now ActionSportsWA) BOP training and other fitness workouts, most of the group paddled race boards.

Thanks to all for these suggestions - has helped to give me a clearer idea of some potential starting points.

SupNewbe - not likely to paddle with a group however a 12'6 x 30 board was strongly recommended by a guy I work with as a good start - they look great to paddle but I'm not sure about the surfing side of that shape in anything but super small???

At least initially for me getting the paddling thing sorted is number one but I hope to progress to some waveriding fairly quickly hence the quest for something to "do it all". I'm not in a position to turn over boards frequently or own more than one.

DavidJohn your vid is really cool. I'm fired up to do a drive and organise some demos really soon.

Thanks again and any additional thoughts welcome.

Thanks.. We had a great day down there today with the same group.. I chose not to take my camera out but should have because we had some magic moments that would have been great to catch on film.
