Anyone got experience with the C4 V1 14 footer in the ocean, on runners and waves? Can it be surfed with the feet at all?

I liked it when demoed on light chop in a lake. My one hesitation was that I found it rolled rail to rail more than DW boards with flatter concave to vee bottoms. I demoed a SIC 14' Bullet and from memory it was a double concave which was quite stable for the width. It didn't roll like the V1 but it would cost me a lot more to buy one. I did get used to the roll of the V1 pretty quickly and it seemed to crush the chop upwind nicely.

The big rolled Vee is what causes it to roll rail to rail I would guess. This may also make it faster when compared to flatter bottoms.

My main question here is I was wondering if open ocean stability of the V1 would be a problem for a new paddler who can surf competently? I don't mind getting a board I can grow into as long as it is not a nightmare for me in a decent DW run.

I had another board lined up but it fell through so back to the drawing board and a V1 is available to me. Other options left at the moment are a Jimmy Lewis M14 and a Falcon, both of which would cost me a lot more than the V1.

Thanks

IMO.. Yes it would cause it to roll more.. and it can faster if you are a very good paddler (like Travis) and as long as you're a smallish light person (like Travis).

IMO.. Yes.. I think it would be a problem.. But I'm only guessing.

Thanks. Not being light (around 92kg) my instincts might be right, too tippy rail to rail. Just got a line on a used 14' Naish Glide. Might demo that too. Other option is to take plunge on Jimmy Lewis M14 without demoing it, risky but board gets good reviews.

Sheesh, every time I think I'm out and got a board nailed down I get dragged back in Worth the effort to get the right one though.

PS - You reckon that penetrating nose on Falcons can handle decent runners and ocean DW or really better as a flat water board?

mate travis loves them like that. i can tell you you will not like it like that.

just get the sic i reckon. the ast wood version will have a bit of weight but it will 'sit' better in decent dw conditions and sells at a reasonable price

Tested the V1 again today in some small swell and some bigger chop and my initial impression was confirmed. I could not like the board enough to buy it. It had too much side to side roll.

I just bought a Jimmy Lewis M14. Analysis fatigue got the better of me. I am going away to paddle for a while before my head explodes from reading reviews, posting and staring at a screen. Thanks very much for all the help. I will report back when the salt air has blown the computer fuzz from my head.
