hi mate,

was this the new 10'2 by 32-205l, whats your ability, what do you want the board for ie surfing, paddling, both,

if you want something around this size the naish mana is a great board and has a tad more volume but there arent many boards that have more volume at this size , if it is just for paddling i would look at a 12'6 even a 14 footer, maybe even consider a custom board as they can make a board that would suit you and your ability, just a few things to think about.

Hi Justin

What are going to use the board for, what's your experience, are you up for 2 boards?

At 120 kgs and now 14 mths SUP under my feet, I have recently acquired a Starbaord Avanti 11'2 x 36 or as it was termed yesterday, the pallet........but given my level of skill I shunned the comments of those pesky skinny board riders whom in a 16 knot SW wind were falling off for no reason right left and centre, me, nah fell off once out the back in 90 mins. And it turns, took me a while to get my head around it but as someone says it doesn't look big until you put in on the ground.

However i wouldn't want to paddle it as my distance board, its got rocker so tends to push water getting onto the wave

I tried some lower volume (mines 230 lt) and narrower boards but that might be next year.

For distance, I like 30 wide, anything less with a little chop and its unstable, so my Angulo Shaka 14x30 does the trick.

Food for thought

I'm thinking the big 11'6" NSP might be a better choice if it's your first board.

At 130kg, width will be your friend. I'm just a handful of kegs lighter than you - for a first all-round board I would highly recommend the 12' x 33" Starboard Atlas* (was/is my first board). Stable, surprisingly good glide in flat water, and it's taking me pretty comfortably into waves up to about shoulder height.

If it's a flatwater cruiser or downwinder you're after aim for 30" wide and up around 300 litres in a 14 footer. Walk-on-Water GSR is a ripper. Starboard Open Ocean is good but might be tippy for you early on depending on your balance. The new upcoming 30" Fanatics look like they'll be good for big men. Starby Race 12'6 x 31.5 could also be worth a look.

(*if you're in/near Melb wouldn't be hard to get you on a couple of big boy boards to try)

i was 126kg when i started and i loved my NSP 11" 6 for over a year and very surf-able even the extra wide starboard whopper would be a good starting point think they now make one at 36 wide

i reckon you need to look at the cabrihna 10.8. its 34 inches wide, super stable but will surf really well with enough weight on the tail. At 106 kg i find it too big for me, but its more stable than my 10 foot mana which is another excellent all rounder. The new 9.10 all wave might bo ok too. The new surftech gerry lopez surf music are just out. The 10 footer is 34 inches wide and around 190 litres.
they look fantastic and carry their width way forward so they should be super stable. I picked up the 9 foot surf music last week and hope to take it for a surf over the next few days. Theres heaps of good boards out there and at 130 kilos id set 32 inches wide as the minimum width and at least 170 litres as your minimum volume.

good luck

I'm (only) 92-95kgs but be a newbie I'll throw a few impressions in there which may help.
I bought my first board as I wanted to go for a paddle in the local river and maybe (just maybe) take it out in some small waves eventually.
Also had in mind putting one or two of my kids (2yr old, 8 yr old, 10 yr old) on the front too. So that's some extra weight there.
Bought a handshaped 11'4" Laguna bay cruiser first off.
Being a long time surfer I wanted to try to support locally handshaped brands.
Got my paddle stroke down pretty well and was feeling very good about things.
Then ventured over to to the small waves in the rivermouth and proceeded to be humbled by flailing like I've never flailed before.
Stuff that.
Anyway, kept sticking to flat water which for me after a while got boring. Tried riding the 11'4" in 1' waves again on the open beach one day. Still flailing....bugger.
On a demo day tried a 34" wide Starboard whopper (in the river) but didn't like how poorly it paddled straight. Felt slow and sluggish compared to the big parrallel railed Laguna. No suprise there.
No doubt it would do better in the waves but most of my paddling would be done in the river because as a long time surfer I'd rather go surfing if the waves are any good at all.
So I next bought a 14' Joe Bark expedition and enjoyed paddling that. Nice and stable and fast through the water. I could paddle it in the open ocean or in the river.
Had to sell it due to hard times economically.
Fast forward to present day.
Looking for another sup to do the same as always. Took a Naish Nalu 10'10" for a quick paddle in the river yesterday morning and think I've found the perfect sup for me.
Paddled so well in the flat water. Tracked really well and the deck wasn't awash with 201 litres of volume so my kids will be going for a ride and/or paddling it themselves. Stepping back towards the tail to turn it around didn't have me un-balanced at all and I found I could easily paddle it in a surf stance.
This is a big difference to other boards I've had or tried and I reckon I'll tackle some small runners in the river mouth again and win because of it's stability.
With my other boards going into a surf stance (as a newbie) on while trying to catch waves would have me somewhat unstable already and then throw in some chop and splat.
I'm buying a Naish adjustable paddle so I can make it the correct length for both flat water and surf.
Throwing a vote for the Nalu in as it seems to get overlooked.

^^^ +1 for the Nalu, although mine's 11'6" x 29" (have offered it to Jusso for a demo). Goes great for our local conditions and although I've talked about upgrading it, after Saturday catching small runners & having a blast by myself I can't bring myself to let go of it.

Cuttlefish - check out the QB adjustable paddle - a great (better) paddle imo.

yep the big 11'6 nalu is a whole lot of board and is perfect for big guys, i'm 6 foot and 115kg. not real good in the surf but is fantastic in the river/lake. another one i compared to the nalu when i was shopping around was the fanatic fly. pity you're in vicco and i'm in qld as i've got mine for sale and you'd be welcome to give it a test. a lot of SUP schools and hire places use the big naish, have a hunt around and give one a try.

Thanks for this advice, I'm in the same boat as you (but a bit heavier at 100kg)- I've had my eyes on the Nalu 11'4 or 11'6" but will take a look at the 10'10" as well. I'm also based on Sunny Coast/Noosa, can you advise where you did the demo / picked yours up from?

I reckon at 100 kgs the 10'10 nalu might work but I had a 11'6 nalu at 120 kgs and it was super on the flat and runners but seriously didnt turn, I found it disappointing, they say the 11'4 is better but it just lacked the volume for 120 kgs..........my surfing is heaps (and I'm still a kook) better on the SB avanti but as I said above its not for flat water for mine........

I've been on the 10'10 Nalu at 125kegs and I reckon it's pretty good - stable as a table and great glide in the flat but dunno how you'd go turning it in surf. Another couple worth a look are the Fanatic Allround 11'6 x 32 236litres or 11.0x32 217 litres. Also really liked the Coreban EZ 10 x 34 but that's starting to move into more surfiness and away from the allrounder-that-you-can-catch-a-wave-with type of thing. The list of options for big boys is growing for sure.

should consider the C4 Waterman Da Beach boy coming in at 10'6 x 32" x 4.75 11.6kg and 194L. flat water super stable and in the surf goes unreal paddles onto nothing and can throw it around, nose ride, tandem and have leggy plugs on the front to strap down fishing gear or esky!

in Aus for the moment they come in bamboo and blue or dark wood (koa) and red.

+1 for the Nalu, I started on Sailhacks nalu and loved it. Was 117kg at the time and found it a little corky but was a decent board to surf for a first timer.

As sailhack has offered it up already, I sugest you join us for a little session in the surf

Hi,
Demoed at Ocean Addicts, Maroochydore.
I explained what my focus would be and they've seen my Laguna bay I used to paddle and so we were both on the same page.
They have another one too.

I'm with DJ on this one, 11'6 NSP at 33" wide and about 235ltrs may work well for you, stable, paddles well on flat water, plenty of volume, will surf small waves and also nice on the hip pocket for a 1st board. I like the look of that C4 board Pohaku but the extra volume and length of the NSP will be jusso's friend. Demo a few boards around the size of the NSP too try and find the board you feel most comfortable on.

The NSP 11' 6 works great at your weight, we use them at our SUP school, as said they surf pretty good too. I ride and find the 12' 1 Pearson Arrow Laird more stable, paddles faster, and surfs better. However if I could get one here in the UK, I would get a PSH 10' 10 Hull Paddler, there's loads of info on them on this forum.
Good luck, wish I was back in Noosa on a SUP.

I am right up there in weight. This is my second year on the SUP.
Fanataic Fly 11'6 is a great board very floaty - sold mine and stepped down to the 11' more rocker and less stable but better in surf.

10'10 Naish Nalu - don't let the 201 liters listed fool you. This board is stable and tracks very well - but IMO the 11'6 Fanatic surfs better - but is slow paddling in the flat.

Never tried the NSP products so can't comment.
