Hi all
am in the market for a new paddle for downwinding. Budget of $400.
would love some advice

I recommend a stiff-ish shaft.. and a small-ish blade.. and a quality brand that won't let you down.

Thanks. Other than length of shaft anything else differentiates a downwind paddle from a surf paddle?

IMO.. no difference .. and as far as length goes I'd recommend somewhere in the middle between a flat water paddle length and a surfing paddle length.
(aprox 6" over headheight)
