Hello everyone: I'm new to the forum. I've been surfing for less than a year. Although they're small, I get in the water every week (flat, rough seas, etc.). I took a few lessons on a 165-liter board and bought a 2013 JP Australia 9'6x31 to see if it suited me without spending a lot. After getting hooked, my question is: Will I notice it? How much difference does it make with a current-oriented board? I'm 5'7" and weigh 180 lbs. I'm starting to turn sideways; the conditions at my spot are medium/small waves. Could anyone advise me on which board to buy and if it would be worth reducing the liters, length, or width? Thanks in advance!

At your weight I would look at something in the 125-135 litre range. Also in the 8'5 -9 length depending on the conditions. Something like a Starboard splice, sunova ghost, JL striker/destroyer, smik hipster. There's a lot to choose from depending on how you like to surf. If you like nose riding you could also get a longboard style. Dropping down to a reasonable size should definitely increase your enjoyment. Just don't drop too small as it will likely drop your wave count.

Thanks for your input, it's helped me a lot. Best regards.
