Good Wife,
****elager and the rest of us are SUP junkies. So, we'll find what we think is absolutely best for your man..and withing reason. I'm absolutely sure that you can find a less expensive used board that will fit the bill. However, the give parameters are a bit murky. Flat water with a little surf, is different from surf with a little flat water for example. He'll end up having fun on any of it, that Naish included.
Think of it this way: longer is better for flat water, shorter better for surf. 31" wide enough for any beginner. Light better than heavy. So, My esteemed colleague was setting your man up for a board that would be better for surfing, and less good for flat water.
I'm 6' 83KG and learned easily on a 10'6"x31 180 liter board. So, if your guy is athletic and sporting, he will probably be fine on that Naish.
Hope that helps. Ian
Very much helpful!!
Its gonna be mostly flat water (jervis bay, where the beach house is, and where board will live!) with a little chop and small bay waves thrown in (maybe). So I guess 10"6 is ok?
I can see from threads the "junkie" factor, and knowing my mans history it's possible he'll go that way and therefore decide to upgrade board later.. (we have been through many, many expensive, mountain bikes!) hence why I don't want to spend too much on first board, but rather, find him something to get going on, which can just become the family board later on (hence I prefer decent brand which should last ok with care). Since he doesn't yet know what type of surfing he'd like (I reckon flat will be more likely over surf) then I don't want to get too specialised either way!
