I have been paddling for the past few years on a 10"6' cruising board but have recently moved to a waterfront house on the river/Broadwater on the Gold Coast. I paddle 2-3 times per week and am out growing my current board. I was looking at getting a more dedicated flat water board that can handle wind and boat chop and is quicker and more fun then my current board which is good in surf but pearls in boat chop. Because I paddle from home I have to deal with headwinds and tides as I go out and back but transport is no problem as I am not really interested in driving to paddle elsewhere. I am 5"11' and about 80-85kg. I am open to 12"6' or 14". I like the look of the Naish Javelin and Maliko and also SIC fx pro, however Sunova Faast looks better for the budget. Any suggestions for a relative new-comer?
Heaps of options out there for you but really think about what you want!!
Pure flat water boards with proper displacement cutting bows sounds like it might work for you but just remember they are great in the FLAT but as it gets choppier they can be a bit more of a hand full This is a more pure Flatwater board
http://www.onestanduppaddle.com/boards/edge/Very fast in the flat but as it gets windier they lose any advantage. Boards in this category would be Starboard sprint, SIC flatwater model and so on but pretty easy to tell by the nose shapes as a rough guide.
The other option is a bit more alround board like this
www.onestanduppaddle.com/boards/evo/This kind of board is good in the flat but is a bit more forgiving as the chop comes up or if you want to push on to a boat was or small waves. IMO this kind of board might suit you better. Boards in this bracket would be Starboard Allstar, SIC FX, NSP?? sorry they are to confusing for me to work out what does what!!
Yes there are more boards than i just mentioned but i think you get the idea. Stay 14ft if you can you will have more fun. If you are ever on the South end of the Goldy you are more than welcome to try out the ONE boards as i like them and think they go alright!! LOL
Just to keep everyone happy yes i own ONE SUP so take what i say how ever you like it.
