Bio:
75-80kg, 42yrs old, I've surfed short boards 25+yrs single-fins/twinnies/thrusters. I've been stand up paddling now for 1.3/4 yrs.
Other Paddleboards I've ridden; 11.6 Naish,10.6 Naish, 9.6 Naish, 9.10 PSH.
Shape:
(thruster)
The board has a semi-gun look to it with the wide point a little forward of centre, a flat deck with low rails which get increasingly fine towards the tail, a three stage rocker which is very noticable at the tail, a double concave into slight V bottom. Quite light at 8kgs with fins/pad.
First impressions of this board:
I was suprised by how stable the 8'6" is to paddle - less tippy than my 9'10" PSH ripper ( I guess because the 9'10" is not as wide through nose & tail & is heavier - so less bouyant,also has more V)
It does yaw a bit but I was expecting that it would, the upside is that it really performs well & is very easy to paddle.
Performance:
I was blown away how this board goes... Riding on my backhand with the 8'6" I'm not as restricted as I am with bigger boards, this board can crank a tight bottom turn with very little effort and you then have the choice of a doing a reo or floater or making a clean exit. Steep fast waves and performance surfing are what this board really excells at.
Build:
Pretty solid for a light board, there's no sign of pressure dings in the deck & the rails have withstood occasional paddle-bashes well.
Pro's;
surfing performance
paddling manoeuvreablity
Cons;
yaw
paddle speed
