Just had my first surf on new board thought i'd give a review as not a whole lot online.

Rider: 88kg, 6 months on sup. 20 odd years prone.
Previous board:2012 9'6" psh hull ripper carbon.
New board: 8'2 jp widebody surf
Surf: 2' clean gold coast beachies

First impressions: paddling out very stable on all axis, gets through whitewater nice the nose pierces then seems like the mono concave pops it over. paddles well for size not as much glide as psh but tracks fairly straight, the wide nose seems to hold board in straighter line. On the wave feels alive under foot, loose drivey and the extra width seems to pop the board out of the lip when pumping. was worried about the quads but felt no slide on bottom turns, but surf was small. in fact the quads ( shapers surf fx mediums ) gave a lot of grip when high in pocket and pulling over close outs was much easier where a thruster would have released the rear fin and got sucked back over. really happy so far can't wait to try it on an open face to see how it carves.

I just picked up the widebody pro 8'2 today and taking it for first surf tomorrow, I came down from a 10,5 x 32 so keen to see how loose!...

Nice one Matt. I'm looking at the same board for my step down (currently riding the 10'6 Nalu). I'm a fair bit lighter than you so I'm wondering if I should go shorter still.

Surf was only small 1-2 foot offshore beachies so not too much to comment surfing wise but I was very happy with stability. Board pierced through white water nicely and felt as stable as my 10'5 although the length did look a bit strange to my eye but ill get used to that!... I was worried about such a big step down but it was no problem, maybe it's the 32 wide which is the same as my 10.5 so sideways balance felt much the same. Paddles nice and I found that longer smoother paddle strokes got me gliding better than short powerful strokes when paddling onto waves. Board was loose which i wanted and I almost pulled off a 360 which was nice... Looking forward to some bigger waves but feel I have chosen wisely in what can be a minefield in going to a smaller board.....

These are awesome boards I've been on mine since April and love it also have the Surf FX fins but i got the carbon Pro version couldn't believe how light the board was when I first got hold of it.

Joffadan think the 8'2 probably the go the next wb down would be a big jump as it's a bit narrower and front to back stability would be significant. Being lighter might be worth looking into the surf series in the 8'2 range if you're looking to ride it in the jucier stuff but for the 4' and under days the wb's a blast just so fast it's crazy. Honestly surf like a 6' fish .

You have chosen wisely! I have had an 8 8 for 18 months now and still say it is a hell of a board! Still learning from it, used it in anything from 6 inches to 8 foot, beach, reef, slop, clean.

It's a goer, if you are looking at a set of fins to change the feel, try the C Drive! Don't be shy about a 5th fin location so you can use it as a thruster, works a treat too.

I was out yesterday and got chatting to a bloke riding an 8'10 SB widepoint in carbon (32" wide). We ended up swapping boards for a while. Man what a difference.
I'm so used to riding my 10'6 the 8'10 looked tiny underneath, but surprisingly enough was just as stable. I'm now thinking the 8'2 JP is going to be plenty short enough for what I'm after.

Yep c drives are next on the list probably just for the bigger days still digging the fx fins. Had a lender of the starboard wp in 8'2 carbon before the jp was great too and so light but the refined rails on jp sold me , easier to get on rail.couldn't afford the carbon version but board so fun don't really care and like the extra weight dropping in. got some more vids coming. starting to get more comfortable and improving each surf starting to hit the lip and get some nice snaps. Can't fault it so far.

I just ordered my 2015 8'2 Wide Pro.
Need more vids of yours to get me through the wait Matt!

We really try our best to have the product before everyone else. We are lucky to have a pretty good relationship with the manufacturers due to the volume we sell. One of our competitive advantages is that we carry a vast amount of stock and our customers know that we usually have the board they are after. The boards will be released pretty soon and we hope to post up some info on them in the coming days.

Still trying to decide which fins to run...

I'm really happy with the surfing fx ones. If the new model still comes with the cheap plastic fins I'd chuck em asap. That much for a board you want something good to drive it. I'm thinking c drives for bigger days. But can't fault the fx's yet, heaps of drive and grip but can slide them at will too. Just flatten the board off the rail and boom drift. Even using the slide to drift wide off whitewater when racing sections then reingauge rail to take off. Really are so predictable and I've always been a thruster rider. Think I've converted.

Yeah mate they're the ones. Go mediums plenty big enough. Which ever fins you chose look for an inside foil the fxs look about 50/50 because the fin boxes are dead straight and no cant, I don't think fins with a flat inside edge will work properly.

Finally had the jp out in some juice today. 3 to 4' clean super sucky. Top to bottom barrels on a super shallow sand bank. Handled the late take offs like a charm still fast still loose . Just started to get a bit of slide on bottom turns so maybe some bigger fins for the solid days. Snapped on rail in some steep sections did dishpan and slide a bit at the end of turns but controllable and lots of fun to do. That could be me though still working on technique. Only noticed the width on cutties but these were done at high speed and it's a turn I haven't worked out yet on any board. Sorry no video was too amped to get out.

Sounds like you're having fun Matt. October delivery date seems like a lifetime away for me at the moment.

You need a gold coast holiday I'll hook u up with a demo lol. Yep great to get some swell at last. The 9'6 was fun but really felt like was longboarding. The jp's the type of riding I wanted when I took up sup. Doing stuff that I could never even do on a shortboard with 20 odd years on one. Big drifting slides. Long long floaters. Just got to work on cutties and barrels now. Even starting to think airs might be possible. I'll take out the go pro in morning if not to wired from shift work.
