Hey guys,

I'm new to paddling, have had a Waterborn Evoke Carbon 10' (169L) for 5 weeks (Bought as a xmas present).

I'm in the water about 4 times a week and am finding the Evoke great on flat water and in small surf. If anything it's a little "stiff" in the water on waves (hope that makes sense). I've thought about changing the 2+1 fin set up for a quad to see what happens...

So, I'm looking at a 2nd board thats more aimed at just Surfing. Mostly for walling type point breaks around Torquay VIC.

I'm 100kg give or take, depending on the day - but on my down to about 90kg.

I've thought about the Speeed in a 9'2 or the Allwave in a 8'9. Both are about the 145L size. Any more and it might to too big a jump?

Any advice? Or a different model? Cheers guys.

Hi Taydos, don't know your surfing experience is , but moving you weight back as you initiate the turn will make a big difference to the way your board responds.

Gday Haydos , I am 108 kg 6'3 and surfed a 9'2 prone for 3 years . I bought a 11 ft 34 wide tanker and got hooked , I just got the allwave in 9'5 170 ltrs 32 and a quarter wide in the hrs build great board super tough but a little fat in the middle . Allwaves under 9'ft look to have much thinner rails and the sunover boards look the biz , I picked the allwave because my wife says I break things but it has turned out to be a super fun board and I am super happy with its performance and stability even at 9'5 I am able to throw it around hope that helps a little

Haydos, I am very familiar with the Allwave and the Speeed

The Allwave was where I started my "board reduction"..... it was a great line for me. Stable at a smaller size and surfed well.
I went from the 8'10 Allwave to the Prowave as I improved my balance skills.
I still recommend the Allwave to folks that need the

When I felt I was ready, I made the jump to the 8'10 Speeed.
Totally different universe. Amazing performance.... no comparison.
Simply put.... the best board I have ever ridden.

Thinner rails make for a tippier feel on the Speeed.
The 8'10 is too much work for my winter weight and wetsuit ( 110kg all suited up)
So I picked up a 9'5 Speeed. It is easy peezy in the worst conditions.....and handles up to DOH.
I will trade it out for a 9'2 Speeed at some point.

Your instincts are good, I think you should be fine on the 9'2 Speeed.

They are 2 boards at the opposite side of the spectrum. The Allwave is a general purpose board as the name suggests. The Speeed is a performance board and can be surfed smaller than you think. I am 85 kgs and have the 7'11" Speeed at 26" wide. This is my small board that I use when the conditions are not windy. This board impresses me with how easily it catches waves and is quick and turns easily. The build is to a high standard and you wont be disappointed with it.

I am Sunova fan over the last 10 years and have 2 surfboards that are still in great condition and a Soul 8'3" as my big board. The Soul is my go to board in any conditions and it also rips. It is different to the Speed as I need to be a little more aggressive with it. The Soul replaced a Starboard 8'5" Pro in carbon. I was very happy with the Starboard and didn't sell until I had tried the Soul.


s a better comparison to the Allwave in terms of overall shape.

I totaly agree with these two gentlemen , for my skill level it was allways going to be the allwave and if this wind ever stops maybe I will be to go up another level and think about getting the speed ? I love the smoothness of turns and speed generated I see in the vids STC puts out , looks like such a nice ride . I think I know what I am getting for Xmas

I was out on my Evoke a few times over the last couple of days and I think it's just the width (32") that makes it feel slow edge to edge (especially in small summer waves). But the width helps with stability whilst waiting for waves... hmmm

My favourite surfboard type is a mini nose rider with a pulled in tail (aka takayama Scorpion) , so I guess the Speeed is quite similar in that regard.

I might try and get to 90kg first and then buy an 8'10" (not a bad incentive ) . Has anybody tried an 8'10" and 9'2"? Notice a big difference in the surf?

My local Sup shop said to me yesterday he's hoping/thinking that Fanatic will do a Stubby in a bigger size for later in the year, around 140l so that could be an option too...

If your thinking about the stubby have you looked at the hypernut? 8'6 31.5 wide and 140 ltrs say it's suitable for riders to 110 kg

I have two mates on 9.2 speeds one at 100kg the other at 104 and both go well with no real stability issues in good conditions,they can tend to challenge more in sideshore or backwash type conditions but still very doable.I ride the 8.10 speed at 85kgs and it is a superb craft,perfect for the waves you have on the west coast.my last ride was the 8.10 allwave and whilst a strong, stable ,afordable beast it is simply not in the same class as the sunova speed. I'm gonna try and Demo the flow model also, but I think a Speeed is what i'll go for when the time is right. I want to keep getting my weight down...

I've been reading lots of comments on the Deep Minion... thoughts guys as a step down?

Id hold off on the minion untill your ready to step down again the idea of the minion style boards is to go as short and narrow as possible while retaining some stability. It would defeat the purpose to get one in the 8ft+ × 32 range would feel like a lot of board to try to turn. Check out a x 32" in a traditional design ie jp widebody starboard widepoint or nash x32 if you get round 90kg the 8'2 are awesome or go a 8'8 and be comfortable in all conditions only downside is the are a bit of a handfull once ots over 4ft

Board choice for the 90kg club is very hard when after stability and performance

With my winter gear on, I'm in the 113kg club and I find the 9'5 Speeed a bit more than I need.
