Hi All. Just joined up so sorry if this has come up before.

I've been paddling a family SUP for a while and have reach the point where l'm definitely feeling the need for some speed. I'm 6'2 about 95kg and looking for something to do a few races but mainly just to make paddling for fitness a bit more enjoyable. Can't see myself doing any ocean down wind paddling. Mainly just Port Philip Bay and some rivers.

I'm after a bit of feedback on a Glide 14x29 vs Javelin 14x28. They seem pretty similar in volume and dimension wise. I will get out and test paddle but just interested in thoughts on how these two compare especially with regards to stability, flat water performance and how they would handle chop typical of Port Philip Bay.

Thanks. You're right, it is pretty straightforward. I could buy two Glide GS SUPs and a paddle for the cost of a Javelin.

The Glide GTW has a really nice finish but as far as I can figure you end up paying an extra 1k for cosmetics. Plus Naish quote the GTW as being 0.5 kg heavier than the GS.

Are you sure about those weights? This chart seems to show the GTW 14x29 as a couple of pounds lighter than the GS.

Both are heavy boards by current construction standards though. So they'd better be cheaper at the retailers than offerings like the Starboard Hybrid boards (eg. All Star) or the Surftech Pro-Elite construction ones.

I'm a big fan of the Glide myself but yes, it is heavy. If you're worried about that and don't mind 2nd hand there's a Javelin 28" in the classifieds at the moment (I'm in no way, shape, or form associated with the seller by the way…) that seems like good value for what it is!

According to Naish the 14x28 Jav is over 10 lbs lighter than the 14x29 Glide GS. That's unreal! Is the Jav really only 24lbs? I haven't tried a 2016 one but when I paddled a 2015 one I wasn't struck by how light it was at all. In fact I remember thinking that it felt heavier than my SICs. Does anyone have one that they have put on their scales? How much does yours weigh, DJ?

Hi area 10 .I weighted mine just then ..2015 GX carbon 14/28 javelin and with the 10 inch fibreglass fin I have in it at the mo .it is a tad under 14 kg.= 30.9lb ..fin must be a kg in weight ....without the fin they said it was 12.8 kg when I brought. It ..the new full carbon race 2016 claims it is 11.1 kg without fin ...1 gm heavier than last years race full carbon javelin .
but yeah the 2016 GS 29 Glide is 35.3 lb or 16 kg Compared with 11.1. Kgs slight difference .also the price.

Yes .GTW .14.9 kgs is the correct weight ..off the chart I have here ...16 kg for the GS / 29. /14 '. it must be a error .on the site .
also they have the 11' GT Nalu as a single but it is a thruster ..

A standard composite race fin weights 8oz. A heavy glass fin (aka Allison's) around 12oz. No way does a fin weigh a kg.

Never believe the board weight they tell you. Bring a cheap scale with you and weigh it.

Your right .baddog ....I double weighted it on different scales ,same ...gx 14' carbon 28 ...13.630 kgs fin .386 gms ..total 14.016 .
makes the GTW seem quite light at 14.9 kg ..if its right ..
the mythe has been busted ..I thought it seemed a bit heavy ..Im not as piss weak after all.....I can lift 14 kgs ...With one arm

Published board weights on manufacturer sites - yeah if it's on the internet, it must be true.

I wouldn't put too much stock in max rider weights either.

But for the OP - 29' Glide will be better than fine, a 28" Jav wouldn't be out of the question if you're reasonable fit. Demo both if you can but the Glide is noticeably more stable IMO & will be the easier prospect in PPB chop, bumps and downwinding.
