Hi all,

I'm 198cm, 91 kgs and ride a carbon 8.0 x 28 110L Starboard Pro. I'm looking to switch to a Hypernut. I paddle my 8.0 in all conditions but am wondering if I'd find the 105L x 28" 7.2 HN too small or would it offer comparable float/stability for me? Or would the 7.4 x 30 be a better choice? I've ridden the 7.8 Hypernut and it felt too big and chunky for my taste, although it was fun. I love the 8.0 but am wanting a change to a shorter, more playful board. So, 7.2 or 7.4? Thanks for any thoughts!

I never rode either of them, but I bet you will find the HN much stabler than your Pro.

At 100kg, I found my 105lx29" "Tomo-like" (with a more pulled in nose than the HN, so even less stable) as stable as my 115lx29" "normal" pulled-in nose and tail board.

I've already rode those two boards. The 2012 8'0 Pro at 110 liters was actually a bit unstable comparing to similar boards nowadays. The 7'2 Hyper Nut is a much stable board than the 8'0 Pro (even the new version), so you would be fine with it. You're a big guy and I would generally recommend a board like the 7'4x30, but if you can ride the 8'0 in every conditions you won't have any difficulty with it.

Go the 7'2 , its very stable and you really notice the shorter board length compared to 8' and near 8' boards.

Cool! For what it is worth, I agree with the feedback that the 7'2 would be more than stable for you if you surf the Starboard Pro. I bought the 7'4 a month or so ago and have also surfed my friend's 7'2. One other thought is that according to Marco, in 2018 the 6'10, 7'4 and 8'0 all come with the tuttle box pre-installed if having a board you can foil is a consideration.

I would love to hear your comparison of the Starboard Pro to the Hypernut once you surf the HN, as I sold all my surf SUPs except for a 9'0 longboard style shape and this Hypernut and was thinking about holes in my quiver and have looked at the Pro.

Pulled the trigger on a carbon 7.4. Sadly the 7.2 wasn't available anytime soon and I sold my 8.0 Pro. This will be my one board solution (my 8.0 was my sole board previously). Will report back in a couple of weeks. Nervous I went too big....

I think you might find it a bit wide given your history but it is a great board! I continue to surf mine and do love it. I noticed you are in Canada? California kiteboarding still has 2017 7'2s that are on sale now in Starlite and Carbon construction...not sure if they will ship up to you and if it makes sense to cancel your order on the 7'4 but it is a thought.

Mine'll be a 2016 Carbon 7.4, so no foil unfortunately. I tried a friend's 7.4 in Starlight construct. on the weekend for the first time. Waist to shoulder high gutless stuff. Crazy stable, a bit weird at first. I have no doubt the 7.2 would be fine now, but I'll make do! Pretty relaxing to stand on the 7.4 HN in comparison to my old 8.0. Just hope the performance in better waves stacks up!

I don't ride the HN anymore, I found the smaller sizes did not have enough glide for the breaks I normally ride. They do handle decent size but the breaks I ride either have shifting peaks or get pretty wind affected by an off shore breeze so the HN was harder work.

I have pretty much settled on the below quiver and ride the 9'0 the majority of the time. It's a damn good board and handles a broad range of conditions. When it gets bigger and cleaner I swap to the Pro.

Alright, so I finally picked up and surfed the 7.4 carbon HN last weekend. Waist to head high waves of varying power and fairly lumpy surface state with current. I found the 30" width to be really nice to stand on and quite stable where I'd have really been challenged/frustrated on my old 8.0 Pro. It gets into waves easily and generates speed very quickly. In slopier waves I'd have been bored by previously, the HN generated enough speed to come back to the lip for a good bash. I giggled a few times on the types of turn I was getting even! Where I need to sort things out is on bigger/steeper drops where the width seems to need to be nursed more to avoid losing the fins/rail, though this could be down to me still adjusting to this style of board. It was still responsive on the larger, more powerful waves and I got the fins to break free a few times on some top turns before reengaging quickly. When standing, the nose up to the front of my feet is above water and the flat deck feels great. The rest of the board sits just underwater in a well balanced way. The construction chips very easily it would seem so I'll need more care than my old, bombproof carbon 8.0. So, so far so good! As a one board solution it should be fine. Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear you are enjoying the Hypernut and it doesn't seem too wide! It also doesn't sound like you don't miss the Pro too much which is consistent with what I heard from others. I continue to enjoy mine though you are correct that it does use a slightly different style of surfing. I actually found that the Hypernut improved my surfing because it forced me to read waves more so that I am taking off closer to where it is critical and also use my paddle more for bracing in bottom turns and driving into cutbacks but my other board is the 9'0x29.5 so it is a 1.6' drop in size. Interestingly it sounds like the 2017 carbon construction that I have where they infuse the color into the epoxy is as significant improvement over the 2016 model--but I do also have railsaver pro on it.
