Hi guys,
Recently purchased the new 2012 8'9 hull ripper, this board is so much fun to surf!
fast, turns on a dime and glides over whitewash.. it did take a few sessions to get my foot placement right, no margin for error with these boards!
Although it surfs great there are a few things I'm disappointed with.
1.handle placement is too far forward, totally unbalanced making it annoying to carry.
2.Same old crappy fins! I know it's been said before but it still s***s me, Just ordered some SA4's to try out.....
3. chips very easily
4.the new board construction is vacuum bagged PVC.
I have noticed after only 5 or 6 sessions the deck is compressing quite badly! The made in china sticker on the tail did make me a bit nervous, I have owned 2 previous PSH boards and this has never been an issue.
I cant find any info or reviews on the new board construction but I would love to hear wether other people have experienced similar problems with the 2012 or earlier hull ripper models.
I love Surfing PSH boards but not enough to put up with a dodgy build .
as my dad used to say... you cant polish a turd!

Not sure the vacuum bagged ones are in Aus yet? Think you may have the carbon/bamboo model. The deck will go down a bit like a surfboard and them settle, gives you little guides for your feet. The rails are so thin they are prone to chips, if you are worried get some rail tape. Yep fins are crap SA's are great.

They do surf exceptionally well

Hi Hilly,
A mate of a mate of mine flew a few of the 2012 hull rippers back over from Hawaii a few weeks back, absolute legend, seeing he had to lug the boards back with family in tow! and we've all had the same issues. I hope the compressing does settle
Cause I love surfing this board!! my quads arrive today and there's a bit of NE swell running, got a few sickies up my sleeve!

I am the mate of the mate and we gave the local industry all the opertunaty that we could. They have been the ones that have not come through??? Even trying to get a call back on fins or even top end paddles has been a major dramma. I am in manufacturing in Australia and our company is feeling the pain of over seas compation. But we stand by great service and product. So if you dont get these it makes you look else where!!!! So its not karma in my view just a slack product?

As southcoasty said these boards take a little to get used too but once you get them tuned in FANTASTIC!!! I was a Naish man but have been converted to the great surfing ability of the PSH Hull Ripper. But i snapped my Naish after only a few months and to get a PSH new that is only a couple of surfs old and starting to break down. Most of us have families and a mortgage to pay and these things are bloody expensive to replace every couple of months

Will be interesting to hear what you think of the quads.

It is a fine balance getting boards light enough to enjoy surfing but strong enough to last. My JL's were the best built boards I have owned. They were PVC wrap so I assumed the new psh boards would be as strong. Will see when I get mine in a couple of weeks.

Guys I am the local importer and I don't recall any follow up calls from you other than trying the local 8'9 Hull Ripper demo board? You will find some pretty good service down here if you give us the chance.

On the construction side, we have had a sample of the new PVC Vac bagged construction for 2 months now and have thrashed it, literally. It is solid.

It looks like you have boards from the very first batch that went to the US with the lighter 'team' layup.

PSH stand solidly behind the quality of their boards if there is a manufacturing problem. Normally you would have to deal with the country of origin when buying overseas, but in this case we have been asked to get involved and see how we can help.

So please get in touch so we can see if we can be of help.

Hi there, interesting to talk to the source. I've been checking out the new PSH boards on their website. I'm interested in the new 8'9 all arounder. Can't find any info on prices or weight. How does the vinyl wrap construction 2012 compare weight wise? Also looks like they have a new square rather than swallow tail. Have you tried one of the all arounders out?

Hey Mick, the new 2012 PSH range has only just been released in Hawaii and most of the new boards are up on the PSH website.

We have a small and limited shipment of these new boards arriving in 3 weeks.
The new range is available in both Wood Veneer and VB (Vacuum bagged) PVC, which we have been testing here over the last few months.

I will be posting info on the new boards we will be receiving, the construction and pricing over the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

I have been riding the 9'0 WAA which is very similar to the new 8-9AA for the last week up at Scotts Head in everything from 2' -5'. It is a very capable board taking some sucky drops and getting around sections nicely with my 90kg. And yes it turns sweet!

PS: Fell in love with that part of the world!

Thanks for that, looking forward to a comparison of the two construction types and board reviews. It is a great part of the world up on the mid north coast. I'll be up there again later this year. Torquay has been turning it on lately though so I can't complain!

Cool, maybe we can get it from two different perspectives, NSW vs WA. Then you guys can send me a demo board and I'll give the Vic opinion. That sounds like a great idea doesn't it?

Hi AA,
I have bought all my stand up gear through your outlet and you have always been great to deal with and have offered a very high quality product so just wanted to say that first up.
I was unaware they had made the 2012 hull rippers with a team layup....this would shed a bit of light on my situation. Thankyou for the offer of help I will get in contact.

No worries Scott! Yeah mate you've been there from the beginning!

Hawaii often gets different boards and different layups for testing.
If your handle is off centre you have one of the earlier layups.
The boards we tested that are now in production wereput htrough their paces over 2 months.

I have a second hand 2011 10'3 Hull paddler and it is an awesome board. A little skatey though on anything over 3ft. I am still trying a few fin set ups, a thruster only unfortunately. I have had it about a month in some solid waves so it has already outlasted my 11ft SA Buffalo (long story). Solid construction and a nice finish also, crazy looking board. What a pleasure to paddle out through the lineup with my 110kg frame, must try a ripper one day......

Absolutely love my PSH ripper in the surf it's a special board but am starting to wonder if its worth the dodgy construction,i know there is a trade off for weight but i can only afford one board and it's starting to spend more time in the repair shop than in the water.
I have had a lot of surfboards over 40 years of surfing and some boards get deck depressions but nowhere as bad as the ones on my PSH and not from the first surf.
I am hanging out to check out the new PVC construction and hope there is no weight increase as i really want to stick with PSH

Those pics of me (above white board) are on the new PSH 9-2 Hull Ripper I also have the old 9-2 HR and yes there is a big difference in the construction , the old 9-2 did really chip and depress but the new PVC vacuum bagged 9-2 after 2 months had no chips or depressions plus it was lighter.

The new 9-2 is also a bit narrower and less of a Hull shape underneath it had more of the 9-1 pro characteristics but much more stability. Definite improvement.

I've just had my surf on my new 2012 Hull Ripper & agree with you. AWESOME to surf but a nightmare to carry. They really messed up the handle position. I actually found it more tiring to carry to the beach than some larger & heavier boards that I've owned. Haven't noticed any depressions yet.
