I did not think there were any out there yet just demos, more details please sounds like a scaremongering post.

To agree to buy one you have to consent not to use it around surfers. No need really.
What stops it ? Driver has to have the throttle on for it to follow them. Or you drive it around back to you.


This is a new thing there is going to be so much bs around how dangerous it is. Way safer than a jet ski in the surf zone.

edit in WA you have to be 200m away from surfers. Same should apply to this even though it is a beach ball if it hits you not 400kg of fibreglass.

Hey Kato,

My mate took his Boogie down that way a couple of weeks ago. He said it was awesome down there, beautiful scenery and great waves.
Funnily enough, he did mention one angry surfer, apparently yelling and swearing at the sight of him being towed into green waves out the back. Boogie no where near the surfer. The anger probably came from seeing him catch 20 waves to his one. He's usually got a GoPro on him, so can probably dig out the footage if you think that will be useful, also have the GPS logs from both the Boogie and the remote so can see exactly where both were during the session.

Every other surfer I have spoken to on the beach after a session thinks the Boogie is great. It keeps foils out of the line up and makes everything safer.

The only way the propeller spins is if the user is holding the throttle. As so as you let go of the trigger, or remote goes out of range the Boogie stops.
If you are on a wave, the Boogie auto manually goes into the follow mode. So if the user pulls the trigger the Boogie will turn and follow the user from behind. But only if they pull the trigger.
For the Boogie to crash into a swimmer or surfer the user would need to go past a swimmer and still pull the trigger.

I've seen a home-built version used in a crowded surf break in Wellington, NZ. No complaints made, yet, but it's only a matter of time.

I got to demo one for 4 days , pretty cool and clever machine . It's not meant for beach breaks but can be used , you just need to keep it clear of the breaking waves. It's not for a learner foiler but an experienced foiler with some pump game. You whip on same as a jetski out wide , once on the wave take your finger off the trigger , wait a few seconds then pull the trigger again and it automatically follows you. You want to keep it behind your wave and you need to be foiling away from the impact zone , so peel off an go right or left then roll off early and pump out to sea away from breaking waves sink down and it just cruises up to you. That's how you use it and do it well away from people. If you put it in too close and gets caught by a wave it will wash in and you will have to go in and get it. It can't punch over much white water it needs to be steered around it , that's how you navigate it from the beach through the break just drive it like a remote control boat to it get through the waves and you paddle out to it. Ultimately you use it on a reef break with a channel and just foil out. Safety wise it's much safer than you think , if you hit someone or yourself it's really soft and the prop it tucked right under it's not that far off centre. I actually took myself out early on in the piece I left my finger on the throttle after I caught the wave and it hit me from behind on the wave , I feel right on it , it was actually pretty funny ,just like landing on a beach ball and I went no where near the prop. Power wise the thing has some serious grunt and was ripping me out on my 4-6 x 30 litre prone board. I struggled on the starts at first but soon got it together . In the right hands and place its just an amazing piece of equipment , I also think Life guards could use to tow out rescue tubes to people in trouble. In the wrong hands or someone just not paying enough attention it to you could pretty easily put it somewhere it shouldn't be... that's the issue I see , it will just take one , I also heard about the NSW ban. It's all one handed starts and towing and after 4 days my left shoulder was feeling it but you would condition to it . Battery wise pretty well 2 hour run time , extra battery $3,000 which is really cheap for it's size. Overall though it's a very clever simple design and Mark the inventor/owner is really nice guy , ex Kiwi Dairy farmer now living in Canberra.

I really like all this new stuff and can see it could do some great things for people wanting to get into foiling but as much as I like it I just struggle to see it not getting banned from 99% beaches, this is for things like the tow boggie and FD and anything else with a motor or prop.

I just really hope normal foilers don't get dragged into the **** that will come to everyone using Efoils and anything with a prop or motor as it could damage the whole foiling sport. Most people won't even know if someone has a motor on or not so could just lump everyone together and that's my biggest worry since foilers already stand out.

In the perfect world if everyone just used these kind of things well aways from anyone else then we would never have any issues but this is not the case and everytime I am out now there is always someone Efoiling around on a FD in through the surfers, kind of funny really as they will stay wide for most of the session and then just sneak in and catch one or two waves around the crowd and that one or two moments is all anyone remembers.

Maybe there needs to be a Efoil section on Seabreeze? Seperate foiling from Efoiling on all levels could be good in some ways.

Definitely some great spots to use this stuff like helping to close the and learning curve for the downwind side or outta reefs that are untouched by normal surfer or water users but if you have a motor and prop on your foil in anyway then anywhere close to other water users is not the spot for you.

I was out this morning ( on a Foil Drive ) and there was a guy out with a home made tow boogie - first time I'd seen one used . He was WAY out and got a stack of waves , generally way further out than me. We were both miles further out than the surfers , but were were occasionally in the same patch of water as each other. His boogie seemed to work really well, and seemed fully under control, he seemed a good dude and all that. But even though I know about the tow boogies there is still a bit of a freak out factor with being around this untethered , powered thing with a prop - you do start to think " what happens if.". . So if that's how I felt , knowing what I know, it's not a big stretch to figure how surfers or the authorities will feel about them. I can see prop guards or jet driven versions becoming a requirement as a minimum. I have always done my best to stay away from surfers as I don't want to be that guy - I can get plenty of waves without bothering anyone. And frankly I don't need the aggro. But I do think there will be some issues around regulating unmanned powered craft around surf zones and other users , and it will likely be more based on perception than reality unfortunately .

The sooner anything with a prop and/or battery assist/Efoil foiling is treated like a PWC the better it will be for the foiling sport in Australia and elsewhere I guess, otherwise we'll all be banned.

I think that anything with a prop and/or battery assist is putting people into the lineup who do not have the required skills to be there in the first place.

There's no need to be at popular breaks in SE QLD etc with a FD, but you see them most days close to the surfers and normal foilers...even though they say "I only go out wide", yeah not true from what I've seen.

Please don't ruin it for the rest of us

Let's not take the skill out of the sport, and that is what efoiling does imo, not for everyone but I'd dare guess a large cohort of the FD/assist market. Everyone will have their own opinion, but I'm for banning all efoil devices around populated areas just like PWC. I've been snaked by a FD user at a popular SE QLD spot who wouldn't be in the lineup without a FD and they lost their **** at me saying it was their wave. If you have any assist you have no rights in the lineup, shouldn't even be there in the first place imo.

When I'm too old to foil in the surf then I'll probably take up efoil too, maybe I'll get a pensioners mobility discount :)

Ha ha yep no skill and almost a pensioner. So we are not allowed on the water to compete with the pumping round and round young guns who piss off more surfers than we do

The rules are already in place its just that most don't follow them including jet skis and clubbies on irbs. Maximum speed 5 knots within 50 m of anyone else in the water or 200 m of the shore. So if you are on foil under power you should stay clear because you are going too fast but using a motor at low speed to help catch waves or get around is allowed if under 5 knots. The other rule to remember is power gives way to paddle

Hi Guys,

Ive had a boogie since late December I was fortunate enough to get the first production model. That's actually me in the above clip. Ive put loads of hours on my unit and can say without hesitation that it is the single best toy I've ever purchased. I live inland so my access to water time is limited and the boogie provides me with the opportunity to maximise my water time. Im literally twice the foiler I was in December with the access it has provided.

Foiling is pretty well accepted in the areas I frequent and I haven't had any reports of anyone having issues with the boogie. The boogie gives you access to bumps you never considered before and as a result I never need to go near surfers. That said when linking multiple waves one might go nearby while on foil but on these occasions I would leave the boogie around 50m beyond the breakers and either pump back to it or drive it directly back to me when done.

One unexpected factor with the boogie is how much fun can be had sharing it around with your crew. I have a float on my remote and will hand it off the other foilers or I can tow up a mate have them whip themselves onto a wave and bring the boogie back.

Using the device responsibly is paramount id be the first to repremand anyone for using any device in an inconsiderate or dangerous manner. It's way too good to risk an out of proportion regulation that might come from a stupid incident. For those suggesting its bad for the sport id argue the opposite this thing takes foils out of the lineup, it speeds up skill progression making more skilled and therefore safer foilers, it makes no noise no wake no fumes. So far the worst part about using it is having to explain to people pre and post session what it is! that and the 20k jet ski that's not getting used now...

Truly I cannot express how much fun it is, get in touch with the boogie man and above arrange a test, I guarantee it will have you frothing hard!

It's super impressive how rapidly the technology is evolving. The reality that comes with more motorised assisted riders in the lineups we see(even in ocean pixels amazing video he's amongst other surfers), the more tension generated and as a result the more rules and bans that will follow in some areas. People will argue from both sides about safety and fairness for so long... As Jacko says, hopefully normal foiling doesn't get bundled in to bans.

Maybe read my post up the top that says they are the same as pwc before you slag people off. The attitude that the ocean is only for young and fit is unusual.
As I have said before they should not be used around surfers. The anti powered people posting probably need to look at their own behaviour as well. Bit of the kettle calling the pot black here. Foilers that pump through surfers waiting for a wave are more likely to get you banned. As has happened at many beaches already.

I love the idea and I may get one, if it becomes legal, as i get older, but for all the non surf background foilers it is important to understand that surfers will not be happy with you buzzing around out the back of the line up and you don't need to so better to just go somewhere they can't.

The foil drive users are already creating a bad vibe with the surfers in my experience so far.

I really like all this new stuff and can see it could do some great things for people wanting to get into foiling but as much as I like it I just struggle to see it not getting banned from 99% beaches, this is for things like the tow boggie and FD and anything else with a motor or prop.

I just really hope normal foilers don't get dragged into the **** that will come to everyone using Efoils and anything with a prop or motor as it could damage the whole foiling sport. Most people won't even know if someone has a motor on or not so could just lump everyone together and that's my biggest worry since foilers already stand out.

In the perfect world if everyone just used these kind of things well aways from anyone else then we would never have any issues but this is not the case and everytime I am out now there is always someone Efoiling around on a FD in through the surfers, kind of funny really as they will stay wide for most of the session and then just sneak in and catch one or two waves around the crowd and that one or two moments is all anyone remembers.

Maybe there needs to be a Efoil section on Seabreeze? Seperate foiling from Efoiling on all levels could be good in some ways.

Definitely some great spots to use this stuff like helping to close the and learning curve for the downwind side or outta reefs that are untouched by normal surfer or water users but if you have a motor and prop on your foil in anyway then anywhere close to other water users is not the spot for you.

This tow boggie thing looks like unreal fun and for sure I could see myself towing some really out of the way spots with it and when my jetski dies it might be an option but until then my bank balance says no haha.

The sooner anything with a prop and/or battery assist/Efoil foiling is treated like a PWC the better it will be for the foiling sport in Australia and elsewhere I guess, otherwise we'll all be banned.

I think that anything with a prop and/or battery assist is putting people into the lineup who do not have the required skills to be there in the first place.

There's no need to be at popular breaks in SE QLD etc with a FD, but you see them most days close to the surfers and normal foilers...even though they say "I only go out wide", yeah not true from what I've seen.

The rules are the same as a ski mate, so if you can go the same places skis do. If you can't safely get waves unassisted around surfers or aren't fit enough to link multiple waves then bad luck, don't ruin it for everyone else.

Not sure I am following the distinction that being fit enough somehow makes it ok. If you are the douchebag that hangs out on a foil amongst surfers and gets first set, then pumps back and catches second or third set, then you are douchebag, regardless of whether you are using an assist, or not. You may think that because of your skill, or fitness, level it is justifiable, but it's not. You are a douchebag. That's why the aggro from others in the lineup.

There is no safety around surfers in a crowded lineup when are you riding on top of two swords in a T pattern. I am not seeing how the addition of a little motor with some blades makes it super dangerous, but the foil itself is all good?

Going back to the fitness argument... where does that end? What about the dudes on longboards and midlength prone surfboards? If you cannot duck dive it well, or at all, then surely you are also a danger to other surfers. And you are only using those boards because you aren't fit enough to paddle a 5.9 28litre board?

surfers hate SUP riders.

short boarders hate mals taking their waves.

short boarders snake and hate each other.

so when a surfer gets angry at me foiling, i just smile and wave. i assume he is angry at himself, life and every other surfer around him.

I encourage all surfers to chill and be nice to each other.

Can you describe the behavior that is upsetting people? I've seen the home made ones over here in LA and they stay well outside the lineup.

I just used a FoilDrive for 12 months around Oz and had no complaints, the opposite in fact, I had heaps of surfers coming up and asking what it was and saying how cool it was.

Blatant violation of conventional surf etiquette... he didn't catch many waves, but he did catch a lot of the better waves- connecting way outside the crew that had been patiently waiting for a good set with no interaction.

This was with the mellow weekday retirement crowd, no telling what would happen on a weekend with swell

Ah yeah, that's pretty blatant. If you're using a motor to catch waves you don't get to ride in the pocket through surfers. You ride outside the surfers in a section they can't use, then out on the shoulder well away from them or better yet, kick out before you even get to them. Sucks that some people don't have common sense.

So he foiled through the surfers? That is a no no for prone/sup/powered foils. It was the pilot not the tool.
