He must have been towed by jet ski first. No way you could paddle onto a small wave like that and get it to lift.

I'm betting there's a Jet Ski just out of the shot.

I'd say photoshop. Shadows are all wrong and I agree with CMC it's not going to be possible to be up on the foil at paddling speeds.

I think you would win that bet CMC.....its either photoshop or a tow in.
Takes a fair bit of horse power getting a foil to fly.....not a great amount of speed, they still fly around 10kph
Once flying the power needed to sustain is minimal. Also foils being very sensitive to ride, the lopsided sup paddling stroke would make control very difficult.






The only paddle powered foil I know of is a Flyak..check it out on utube....the guys getting these craft flying are very strong paddlers

todays kites are more appropriate....once flying you can dump the power....

I know perfectly the guy, he is named Bruno Andre, french surfer/kite/wind, designer of the Nah Skwell SUP brand.
I saw him surfing with the foil, just using his paddle...Very beautiful glide

I wonder if this will inspire Laird into giving it a crack.. I'm guessing that he'd only use the paddle until it lifts.

Wouldnt the foil just act like a big fin (with a lot of drag) untill it got up to planning speed? Sorry cant see video @ work!!

Well......I am happy to be wrong about that one....

Your right Sparx......the cogs are whirring.......I have bits of foils laying around the shed here, just need a shaft, shape up a tail & bolt the unit on to a suitable board.......you want to go first or shall I?


(I bet Laird & the boys are are looking at each other & saying "why haven't we tried that?)

wow. i agree. if he can get it foil just catching a wave, any decent dw er with a couple of links and speed would not be a problem. sometimes it dam hard just to keep up with the board. dw foot straps anyone!!!!!

Yes I agree, the connection with the wave is surfing...thats what we do.

With foiling, it's a feeling like flying, it's literaly is a form of aviation in a very narrow band of water, you don't feel the surface, but rather what a dolphin feels when it rides a wave from below, it's a very powerfull lifting force even on quite small waves.
One of the first things you notice when foiling is the lack of spray when you carve a turn, the "G" force from the turn is there....but silence & no spray....it's fun after years of bashing around the place on the surface chop sending buckets...it takes a while to get used to.
Certainly a challenge

hi, there times on dw runs where you aren't actually running down swell, you are moving with it or the feeling of being pushed or pulled along. the low pressure thingy that a few paddlers have talked about on the breeze it feels surreal. is a similar thing to what the dolphins doing?

Oh yeah! This is like powder and piste! How many days is it to choppy to enjoy surfing?
It looks very much like the feeling of snowboarding on powder!

andrew, at training this morning we were talking about it- very exciting development. in the open class as it stands looking at the new rules- why not. one thing with that guy surfing it- he's not attached to the board and it was mentioned if he comes off the wrong way the foil could cut him in two

Given that I have no kiting, sailing, windsurfing or wakeboarding experience, it all seems a bit gyro gearloose to me. Certainly not applicable to the waves I like to surf. However I would agree that the potential when applied to certain sub disciplines of the sport, could be staggering. It may also just be a flash in the pan!
