Hey there. New to the forum and looking to get some much-needed advice as I look towards buying my first foil.
My overall aim is to get into downwinding on a shortboard. I live on the south coast of Ireland and we have endless wind and offshore swell throughout the year. My aim is to tow start behind a boat and carve away under my own steam from there (with practice).

I will be retrofitting the foil I purchase to an existing 6"1 shortboard with the Foil Mount system. I know these aren't bulletproof but I'm on a budget so I don't have the coins for a board yet.

I've done my research and come up with the following options. Please throw any advice my way. I'm 6ft 3 and 88kg.

F-ONE Gravity 2200 with a 75cm mast

Axis Foil 1020 or 920 Front wing - 440 rear wing - 75cm mast - short fuselage

I've looked a gofoil but I can get either of the above for under 1500?. Goofoils are all above 2000?

So that's where I'm at right now. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Towing in using a boat is a great way to learn DW , if possible drive to a location say 10 -20 k upwind and get someone to bring the boat trailer to the finish ,that way you are running downwind all the time, because it's crap driving a boat against the wind and waves.Next I would use a wind wing, and last try to paddling in as it's the most difficult.lots to learn but that's all part of the fun.You are on the right track with foils 75-85 mast 1500-2400 wings .Out of that bunch you mentioned the axis would be the pick.Youre gonna need a bigger board later when you try winging or paddling for sure about 120 lts.good luck

you're gonna need a bigger board, mate. Getting stuck out there on a 6' sinker can get real scary.

And if using a foil mount, I'd rig up an old leash around the foil mast and attach it to the board. So if the foil does come away or the board delaminates - unlikely, but you never know - then your foil is not lost to the sea bed.

Many thanks. My heart was with the axis too. I have looked at wind wings also. For this season I will just tow in and be out there with a boat or ski for all my riding. When I get an idea of what size swell I can catch and the overall potential I will go full in with the rest of the gear.

Cheers for the advice. For this season I will have a boat or ski out with me. I have an off shore RIB which is great for getting out into the deep ocean swell on big days. My goal this summer is to see how much potential there is in catching and riding these large off shore swells over distance. If it really is possible Ill be buying all the rest of the toys I can :)
