Was lucky enough to get an invite to the Neil Pryde , Cabrhina & JP Australia conference this week. Couple of cool new foil boards coming out from JP , plus Cabrhina released their surf foils which were great , but what really got my froth going was the 2 new wings from NP . Both higher aspect designs including the new XL which is so nice. The new Medium High Aspect called "Slim" is just amazing this has to be the most efficient / dynamic wing for it's size I have ever ridden. Similar cm2 size to existing medium but much faster and easier to pump with incredible turning characteristics. This is not a beginner wing and takes a few waves to get used too but when you do you just can't wipe the smile off your face. Here is a quick video I put together the first 2 waves are on the std Medium the second two which Keahi is riding is the Slim , I'll just let the vision tell the rest of the story. I rode the same set up on my Sup and still clocked over 30 kph in just one to two foot surf.

With kitefoils everyone was complaining that the higher aspect foils were too fast to surf because they outran the wave, so the foils became larger and fatter and slower. But now the surf foils are getting faster. Or are we talking relative speeds here ie. faster but still slow enough? Probably i'm not good enough to understand the subtelties.

Yes that's correct kite foils don't have the surface area to get you going , they are fine if you get towed in on a larger wave but no good for paddling in. Also correct that the early Sup/Surf wing designs were very low aspect and around 1200cm2 , they became much bigger fairly quickly to give more slow speed lift and glide , as riders became better and started to push the foils harder these big low aspect wings would blow out . Riders then started going back to the smaller earlier designed wings because they were now better riders and could ride these faster. This brings us to these new wing designs which are still much wider than kite foils but a much higher aspect ratio.

A good comparison is the Go foil 200 & 280 were the undisputed best Down wind wings around but now they are sitting in garages everywhere collecting dust (especially the 280) because their overall performance is really slow (great for learning) but riders are now demanding better performance. Brands like Axis & Signature now dominate the DW market with the new wide high aspect designs and Go Foil itself has also released similar design wings. Speed wise plus 30kph is very common that's why you see board sizes have dropped in size so dramatically to reduce swing weight and wind resistance in flight. It's not about outrunning the wave you can always slow down , but having the ability to really go fast lets you run through flat sections and link multiple waves plus lets pump back out.

Oh no More gear to save up for.

Just wondering on the difference in initial lift between the Slim & medium? Guessing the Slim may have a little less lift until up to speed. Which may be great in bigger waves.

The Slim pretty well same insta lift as the std Medium , the higher aspect wings can be ridden closer to the surface and don't blow out as much , the trade off is turning it feels strange at first , it feels like it is going to let go.... but doesn't you just need to be confident to ride it. Here is a closer look at the new XL , I took some shots of it between the Axis 1020 and the NP Large. The one thing you can't see in the shots is the NP XL has a much thinner leading edge.

Nice vid as always Piros. Looks like a really long carbon mast they're setting the slim medium up on... like 80cm or more.

We got 2 carbon mast to try and Keahi had the 80 already on so when we swapped he just put the Slim on it , the 80 is really meant for the XL but fits surf and wind fuselage . We were supposed to get a 70 & 80 carbon mast but got a 65 & 80 . I personally would ride the 70 but Keahi prefers the 80. Wouldn't hold my breath on these still early days. They are releasing the 70 Alu mast which I'll use as my daily rider.

Any comparison of the new slim med (or even the reg med) with the Armstrong 1200 or Axis 750? All similar sizes, just wondering if you've ridden the others and have a comparison.

First 2 waves in this video are std med , second 2 are the Slim medium. Very different to the Armstrong shape wise completely different foils. The Axis 750 is smaller and really popular with the tow crew again very different and hard to compare completely different foils.

The Slim is faster and more efficient but doesn't have the same smooth roll in turning , the std will feel more comfortable to most people , it's really for those who want to push a bit harder.

Are NP bringing out a 75cm carbon mast?

If so when will it be released and any idea on price?

Here they are only just got them yesterday , 65cm & 75cm . Note:- that is actual mast length so once attached to the fuselage it''s actually 30mm longer. The finish and quality of the build is incredible. They did have some issues with protos flexing so these have been beefed up with extra layer of carbon & 316 grade stainless steel insert at fuselage end so your bolts are Titanium plated stainless going into solid 316 stainless billet so no more reaction issues. The 75 has a slightly wider cord than the 65 but still narrower than the Ali mast. Best part is the all one piece base plate track mount.

These are the first of the actual production run and you can order now , same goes for the new High aspect medium wing. Sorry no idea of cost , contact your dealer.

Piros Is the 65 carbon much lighter then the 65 alloy ??

& do you reckon the med hi aspect med has similar lift to the standard med Or it a fair bit less and needs to be in good surf ??

The Large for me has way too much when over 2/3 ft and peaky

I have the 65cm alloy Glide and 82cm alloy mast from NP ie NP Flight. Not 100% certain but it looks like you can machine these masts down to your desired length if needed...

Yes pretty easy to cut down at the fuselage end and tap new threads for the 3 bolts. I tried the 820 on a Sup and it felt wobbly at that length, another guy here cut his too about 760 and likes it but he has also reinforced his base plate to give a bit more support.

The 65 carbon is almost a full kg lighter so making to total rig with a medium only 3.2kg
Lift wise the new Slim Medium actually has a bit more lift and speed , it's very dynamic but doesn't have the same roll feel in turns . Bit more of an aggressive wing that has slightly better pump.

The large does have a ton of lift we really don't use it much on the prone for that reason as you get launched pretty easily. The Mediums are my go to wings both on prone and Sup very good all round wing , it's also Keahi's favourite.

Thanks guys. By the sound of all of this I think I will cut a longer aluminium mast down to around 75cm & tap the screw threads further. May get the carbon mast down the track.
Also I may just get a NP small glide wing instead of the Slim for those overhead waves where I want a steady lift & a more control. Even though I have had a couple of good sessions in overhead waves with the NP medium glide. Definitely my go to wing in most conditions. Love it.

Thanks for the info piros. I could get a deal on an 82cm Ali mast which I would use for kiting but I think I will hold out for a 75cm carbon mast which could be the one size fits all option.

Ok whilst were all interrogating piros I have another question.

Will the NP xl wing fit onto the same mast and fuselage as their other wings?

I would like to know how stiff the carbon 65 and and the 75 are compared to the ali 65.

If they are even a little bit less stiff it will be a step back especially in combination with the upcoming XL wing!

I only see proning in the 'New Neil Pryde wings video' , they probably think weight is more important than stiffness.

Young Breezy:- although the carbon mast has a narrower cord it flares out at the fuselage end so exactly the same as the ali mast , so all wings either of the 3 mast.

Camarillo:- The carbon 75 has a slightly wider cord than the carbon 65 (but narrower than the Ali) and is 500 grams heavier than the carbon 65 due it extra layups. It's still almost 500 grams lighter than the Ali mast , it is super stiff but not as stiff as the Ali mast it virtually has zero flex . As far as 75 long carbon mast go I haven't felt a stiffer one than the new NP. I hear what you are saying but the flex is pretty minimal compared to other carbon mast.

So would you say the 65 cm carbon NP mast is stiffer then the 29,5 Gofoil mast?
The Gofoil 29,5 is stiff enough for me , even with the Maliko 280.

I would prefer to get the 65 cm mast because of the shallow sandbanks at my home spot....

And one more thing, no more water inside the carbon masts?

I heard the XL wing will not be available before the end of the year, very disappointing.
In that case I will maybe get an Axis S102.

Just talked with USA distributor of Neil Pryde. They are pretty clueless. Container expected sometime in October, they are unsure of contents. They do not know of pricing for the XL wing. The new carbon mast will have a retail price of US$850. Yes, mast only for $850! Yikes. Website is out of date, local shops have heard nothing from NP as far as new product. Starting to seem like NP doesn't care much about foiling, thinking about changing brands altogether to one that is more progressive and one that actually has customer service. Thoughts?

I have seen the xl wing advertised here in Australia, on back order, for $500 which seems pretty reasonable, around 40% cheaper than the same size wing from their competitors. $850 us for the 75 carbon mast is a bit hard to believe. Doesn't the whole rig retail for around $900 us? They probably won't be able to sell many if that really is the case.

I am loving my large and medium for sup and kiting( thanks toppleover) I am frothing to get the xl wing and a longer mast. If the carbon mast is over $500 aud I will probably just get a longer Ali mast and maybe try cut down on weight by not drinking so much beer

Whole rig will be $1500. Distributor called it full carbon. I corrected him, as there is no carbon fuselage, obviously. Big prices. They need more options in HA wings to stay competitive.

$AUS500 for XL wing seems reasonable
