Who's going , I reckon this year will be mental . I'm looking at going , who's been before traveling heavy with all the gear . Appreciate advice on getting there . I've got accom sorted with friends.

Yep usually around my birthday - mid August.
I keep saying I am going to go, Covid got in the way for a while.
I was originally going to go to learn to downwind but now that I have that sorted if I am going to leave Perth to go downwinding I think Hawaii would be first choice.

The SIC Gorge Challenge

In regards to getting there you can fly Qantas into SFO and drive up/back. I would avoid any travel on the US airlines with a lot a gear, you'll get royally shafted with excess baggage charges. The other possible way to avoid excess baggage charges is fly SYD-HNL-Portland on HAL. HAL give you 2 * 32kgs to HNL and if you through check to Portland you might get bag tags all the way (note that you'll still have to collect bags, customs, etc in HNL and recheck). When I've flown to Maui with HAL from SYD I've avoided excess baggage by through checking, not sure if they still do it however.

In the states Alaska and Southwest are board and bag friendly. They both fly into Portland from just about anywhere.. A drive from SFO would require a night stay somewhere along the way, it's a long drive. and rental cars are higher at SFO.
