Hi everyone - looking for some more tail options and prices... wondering which brands of tails fit the GoFoil pedestal, with the 2 bolts? I've heard other brands fit ;-)
Hey mate, What front wings are you riding and what tails have you tried?
Hi - I'm 90kg and mostly using a GL 240 with a flat tail. I really dont like the mailko tail with the GL... feels really strange. But I find the flat tail tends to skid out when I gybe. So I'm wondering if there any other tails that I could try that are more directional - and hopefully not so bloody expensive! Fat chance ;-)
I'm 65kg so my experience may be a bit different but I've tried a few of the Gofoil tails with the GL240 and GL180 so here's my thoughts.

GL240+Maliko Tail - (Sup surf and paddle downwind) This tail was designed for a massive front wing with lots of lift at slow speed so it has lots of surface area and lots of hold to balance the front wing. It didn't feel suited to the GL wings that are very neutral in terms of lift. For me it would never stall, no matter how slow you would go but just drive the nose into the water. Turning was difficult to initiate. This tail would be best suited to the original wings.

GL240+9.5Ped+17.5 Flip Tip Tail - (Sup surf and paddle downwind) Stepping off the Maliko onto the 17.5 Flip tip was a lightbulb moment! for surfing its great with lots of control, Steep takeoffs are easy and it turns hard! for downwinding it gets started easy and has great pump. the only place I found it lacks, at least for my weight is in small directional changes. It wants you to lean it over and hook the turn which you cant always do in a downwinder but for surfing or dinging it works really well.

GL240+9.5Ped+18W Tail - (paddle downwind) This tail is a downwind weapon! The flat tail allows very slight and precise changes in direction but without sacrificing any stability. It also allows you to hook into turns if needed. It glides and pumps well and transitions between bumps perfectly. I haven't had any issues with it skidding out but I haven't surfed it yet.

GL240+9.5Ped+14.5 Flip Tip Tail - (paddle downwind) I ran this tail back to back with the 18W on a 7km 15-18Knott downwind run. Initially it seemed like it would be too hard to get started but once I got the hang of it, it started pretty easy. Just required a few extra strokes and pumping with the legs. It was very precise and whippy to turn but had to be on the ball not to loose speed and drop down. It was definitely faster than the 17.5 and 18W, it pumped well but felt a little small under foot so didn't feel as balanced as it did with the GL180 front wing. definitely felt fun and would surf well!

GL180+9.5Ped+17.5 Flip Tip Tail - (Sup surf) - I'm pretty light and I'm surfing/downwinding a 5'6 x 26&1/2" Sup so I found this tail a bit too big for me. Takeoffs were a bit tricky as it had too much grip in the face of the wave and I found turning a bit clunky. It had plenty of glide and pumped well but I found I had to expend too much energy per pump due to the surface area. saying that, I don't think its the fault of the wing design but rather finding the appropriate size wing for the rider weight and gear setup because moving on to the next wing...

GL180+9.5Ped+14.5 Flip Tip Tail - (Sup surf) - Wow! What a difference! From the first wave this setup just clicked. Takeoffs were smooth and easy and the wing just feels perfect under foot. Heaps of control, turns really easy and doesn't feel sketchy at all. Pumping is awesome, you just need to be nice and high on the mast and maintain your speed. This wing combo surfs so nice, its faster than all the other high aspect wings I've ridden but its the only combo that surfs/turns nicer than the old, slow, low aspect wings (in my opinion).
There's also the Kai and 12.5 flip tip tails and the 6.5 pedestal but I have no experience with these yet and what works for me wont necessarily work for someone else. I think there's a lot in picking the tail wing that the manufacturer has matched to the front wing and learning that as a complete setup before trying other tails, that way you can tell what's better or worse for your personal tastes. regardless of what brand tail wing you get you'll still need a pedestal. But if your looking for grip and direction then the Flip tips have that in spades!
