Foiling just got embarrassing for me watching this video. You could have been out there under your own steam in a nice quite environment.

I remember suping suffering the same fate. It was like it became embarrassing overnight and I instantly sold mine. Now foiling is looking very uncool all of a sudden.

I was supping out there on Sunday when one of these blokes, the one with blue on his board, was out there. I'm not sure of the camera angles and what not but he only came in near us once when everything was calm and gave lots of distance between us and him. This bloke clearly knew what he was doing and I never felt unsafe around him. When around us he caught one wave that nobody could catch during a lil then went well wide again. I honestly felt unsafe around all the learners and intermediates on mal's that day. They didn't have a clue how to paddle or handle their boards when caught inside. Then there was the amount of pull backs they were doing. On Sunday this bloke was what I believe to be riding in a dimension of waves we were not able access so it was a massive novelty watching him and I really enjoyed seeing someone enjoying a part of the ocean the rest of us didn't have access to. It was also one less person to content with waves with on.
this all being said the unsaid agreement between foils and everyone else is that if a paddler wants a wave a foil is on the paddler goes and the foiler gets the next wave? The same as supping, if a prone surfer wants a wave I'm on they can happily burn me and I always try and encourage that if around people. Again, this all said I was only really looking to go left out at kirra so take what you want from that also.

A great conversation. Good to see that we're trying to police our own before we lose the right. But also great to hear from someone who was actually out there! Camera shots can be very deceptive.

Yeah it is a very powerful lens bit over 900mm on full zoom which does pull the background in a lot closer . This is a frame grab of the shark net boat that same day servicing the nets to give you an idea of its range .

Firstly the surf looks like there was plenty of opportunity to chip in without a motor. it's taking the elegancy of the sport of foil surfing by dumbing it down. They look cumbersome.

Both foilers are clearly better foilers than the riding being done on the foil drive setup in waves where they could have foiled much better without the huge weight penalty of the foil drive, larger foil and bigger board. Watching and knowing this is cringe worthy.

The choice to make all this noise of the motor in and around the line up for quantity over quality when it could have been better without the motor.

I think they are a great tool for foil time for beginners or when the waves aren't catchable in any other way because not breaking and then at least then the performance penalty isn't so bad because the fullness of the waves match the slowness of the response of the equipment.

The excessive marketing of the foil drive will not be judged well by history in my opinion as it will be seen for what it is, a comparatively cumbersome piece of equipment that is good for beginners to get some foil time.

Thanks for the detailed reply . As far as the chip in goes that day I also filmed a very good prone foiler at the same time he got a total of 3 waves in just under 2 hours and the other proners out there didn't fair any better.,So yeah not so good. Would you have rather seen 2 more Sup foilers in amongst the surfers .,

Weight wise you do know the entire Max unit weighs 4.5 k and the Slim is only 2.8 kg that's prop , motor and battery everything . So those boards the boys are riding are actually lighter than any Sup foil out that day . So no it wasn't holding them back and Mark was on his normal prone board & foil. The noise buzzing around yeah I agree can be annoying but that's why when then run back out they are super wide of the pack and that's where they catch the wave up to 100m further out and the motor is off . That's why you don't see any other foilers on the waves because they can't catch them . The foil drive has opened up so many foiling opportunities with Big waves , nasty beach breaks , pressure waves . Regardless of wind or conditions you can go out in anything and the powered duck dives are insanely good for getting in conditions you wouldn't have a chance on using a prone or Sup.

Im not paid to put up these videos I'm injured out of the water ATM that's why you are seeing so many but I'm only doing the same as when I first started Supping , then towing , Sup foiling , Kite foiling , prone foiling , wing dinging , Sup DW and now foil driving . This is my video log evolution of my foiling genres . Because of my constant work and time I put into my videos new products find there way to me very quickly , I am not locked to any one brand. Who knows what will be next so watch this space . Foiling is still in its infancy so much more is on its way , exciting times ahead . This nonsense of bans and rules I have copped my whole foiling career . The Sh!t I copped when I first helped introduce Supping & Sup foiling was hell , same for the prone even worse then then Wing Ding OMG , now it's the same thing about the Foildrive but the funny part is it's coming from foilers which I find hilarious.

The fact, as you say it, is that you have managed to attract a lot of sh!t in all the disciplines that most of us have never had trouble in should be cause for some self reflection as it is not the craft as we all agree. I do remember you attracting some grief about suping in waves that were pretty unsuitable for those early sup barges you rode. Maybe you helped make it uncool I don't know.??

I have been proning foiling from the very start and met some wonderful foilers and all with the desire to leave surf culture behind so when the criticism comes from within our community it is out of real concern for the future and maybe it would be good to listen not laugh.

Now on the technical side it seems to me that riding a foil drive in efoil mode requires a larger board and larger foil and the max with its massive 4.8kg penalty to be able to get efoiling a reasonable amount of times to call it a good session. It doesn't matter if your Josh ku, Eric Antonsen or Paul cooper the penalty is there for all to see and it is real even at their level let alone the average punter who has had enough time on foil and would like to up their prone game. Plenty or foil drives have already changed hands for this reason. I will say it again fd has its place but I don't think that is how it is being marketed.

My personal interest here is I don't want prone foiling getting all the negative attention and getting banned because of efoil behaviour.

What you have missed from my reply was that I was there from the start at Supping in 2008 & the first to introduce Sup foiling in Aus 2016 that's 8 years ago then proning the same year .I was also one of the first to get a Ding in Qld . I'm talking back then the grief was huge , the only people I get grief from now is you and no epoxy , that's it seriously . As time went on it became more accepted but at the start it was "these things are dangerous they need to be banned bla blah blah" . I actually helped pave the way for you guys . Here's the video to prove it where I gaffer tapped my kite foil board to a Sup and this is before GoFoil & Naish foils in Aus . Yes of course I get discounts on gear but I ride what I want . I say no to free gear as I don't want to be tied to a brand . You've got me totally wrong all I want to do is share the stoke and I have made foil friends world wide and I still prone ,tow and ding. Go back through all my videos and you will see frothers in all foil genres .
Re your personal interest being you don't want prone foiling to get negative attention so how are you addressing the pump crew I see constantly doing laps through the surfers and taking off and getting launched in the line up at Kirra , Snapper , Burleigh ect and add to that Sup foilers doing the same and don't say it doesn't happen , I see it every session , that's where your real issue is . The difference here is I don't get on Seabreeze and put up post about it. Anyway we both have rattled on enough about it I'm out and if you want to keep knocking the performance of the FD and saying things " it seems ect " I think you need to try one at least before you can knock the sh!t out of a product . You are right colas and in life it is about being present and conscious and not what others think. That was a long time ago and I was always a short board surfer first so I left sup behind and became a kite foiler long before surf foiling and I couldn't be happier where it took me. Please don't feel sorry for me as it couldn't have worked better. Leaving the negativity that sup became for kiting was a great new challenge.

As another early adopter of foil sports ,I feel so fortunate that I got to surf waves on foil so many times all by myself. It's like surfing back in the 60s would have been like. I even looked forward to foiling on the Gold Coast because I could always get uncrowded foil waves and it just blew me away. It was inevitable that the day would come when it got popular enough that the pressures of sharing a limited resource would cause some conflict.

I keep steering you back as for me this was always about the effect on foiling culture that efoiling foil drives might have and where I think it will lead.

it wasn't about the foil drive product or anyone's implied creditability and it certainly wasn't about that narrative you have created for yourself in your head.

I do admit your video of Jake and billy at Burleigh in circa mid 2017 to a dma's tune was influential in me seeing where prone foiling was going so thanks for that but I was already well into my personal foiling journey by then anyway so you didn't pave the way for me but thanks anyway.

You have at least influenced me in accepting what will be will be and arguing for self regulation is a waste of time. Enough form this old man, I am out of here.

So instead I'll add my 2 cents on this topic that is current plaguing the sub forum. It seems to me that the most aggro I see in the "lineup" is actually right here with some people acting like somebody ate their cookies and insulted their entire family tree. Take a chill pill.

Weird how negativity follows negative people. I sup surfed for 6 hours today and I was the only dude on a sup for the first 3. I got hoots, compliments and smiles from the other surfers. There was also a dude on an efoil. He did his own thing and didn't bother anyone.

It will all depend on how the local authorities group the different surfing disciplines. Will prone foil, Foildrive and efoil be grouped together or will the prone foilers be grouped with the mals, sups and short boards.
Change will definitely come as powered surfing becomes more popular, it so easy to get out the back with a prop fitted. In the past the kooks had to get past the breaking waves to get to the lineup, it's hard, so kept most in close away from the lineup. But not now, so easy to blast past or around breaking swell.


It's not the experienced surfers/foilers who will cause the change and increased rules, it's the entitled kooks who will ruin it for the rest of us.

As a very non talented but experienced and determined wing foiler, I've been attempting to get into sup foiling with a hope to move to prone. However, to do this I need a foil drive if I'm to learn sometime in the next decade.
The foildrive is definitely heavy and takes away a bit of performance on a wave, but heck, if you can't get on a wave in the first place, then I'll happily cop the weight on my board. Looking at that video is inspiring, and seeing them do it in a responsible way is also a message that I really appreciate. I think us foilers all share a desire to enjoy waves, but to do it responsibly so that incidents between different users don't end up with foil bans coming into place. This video shows me that the foil drives actually allow learners to be far more responsible when trying to pick the sport up because the motor helps to get you onto a wave easily, meaning you can pick waves well away from the crowds.
As with other foiling disciplines, I think it's important to use it responsibly, regardless of whether you're a winger, proner or foil driver.
