I think you get it as you get better and figure out your first half price foil and six foot, 10kg surfboard do not cut it.
This works both ways.
When your 7'8" SUP boards weights 4.8kg (without pad nor fins), the idea to bother with the foil gear is not very attractive. And such a SUP on a wave gives me more fun than a foil. Especially when walking/paddling some kilometers give you access to deserted peaks, why bother with all this gear to carry.
This said, from the people I know, I see less people SUP foiling. They either moved on to surf foiling, on the quest of the smallest board possible, or quit SUP foiling altogether (but most of them Wing foil instead).
I understand your argument about dragging around foil gear. TICK. I hate carry the SUP/foil, pulling apart the foil, putting together the foil.
But the upside is the time on the water.
We have had a big uptake in both SUP foil and Prone foil riding. Been massively assisted by the owner of the local kite/SUP/wing/foil store being an enthusiastic participant in the madness with us.
I spent most of my time kite foiling the last four/five years, but started SUP foiling this year because of the average winter wind. So I progressed from 800cm2 kite foils to 2000cm2 surf foils. There were about 10 foils used in that progression/learning phase. But a lot of the progression was also related to the gear manufactures producing better products.
The original aluminium LF fish/foil combo was a great learning device, but the Slingshot was so much better. And Zeeko Carver was a massive improvement over both of those .... etc etc etc
Then you want to improve your carving ability ..... so the LF fish, gets replaced by Shinn Paipo, then a Naish Hover 155, Naish Hover 130 etc etc
Then you want to maximize your time on the water, so you start pairing light wind boards with big wings.
Naturally I graduated to winging as well, so now the 2000cm2 gets used for SUP foiling, kiting and winging (paired with the appropriate board for the wind/wave conditions).
It is all fun.
