I knew this was around the corner but not so soon. Couple of other proto types around. The foil has so little drag once it's up the electric motor should last for ages. This one does look easy to ride.

I like it.. for just cruising around like that..

You could even use an inflatable board for that..

Funny how the only conditions that they used it in were mirror flat water though.

At St Kilda marina we have a speed limit and I'm sure that's over it.. and we often get these big basket ball size jelly fish.. Hitting one of those at speed is sure to result in an unexpected face plant.. It's bad enough when your fin hits them at slow speeds..

I see it as an excellent way to learn balancing on a foil, before attempting kitefoil/windfoil/supfoil/surffoil

There is a distinct lack of turns in that vid! Won't be fun if you can't hook into a turn........

Strange that they do not show anyone actually turning the board, do they only go in straight lines ?

They will turn fine but that is the next level of foiling. Watch what happens to me at the end of this video when I try to turn. I'm only a beginner but I have taken heaps of kiters out behind the boat and they carve some pretty serious turns.

For flatwater cruising as shown seems quite boring once got the hang of the equilibrium, but as a learning or assisting platform for other uses, may be.
Just brainstorming :
Some experience multi sport rider (Kai Lenny, C Baxter, Robby N...) should try in a downbreezer. Hopefully, the motor would only be needed to take off, once up, the runners and wind should do the rest. Even more interesting: in a downbreezer you could use the motor to assist you upwind in prone position, so no car shuttle hassle

Once with proper high wind downwinder conditions you don't need the motor. Put that same foil in a sup downwinding foil board (need to be lighter) and there you go, the balance and skills you learnt in milder conditions will have prepared you for the real thing
As I said, just brainstorming, does anyone see a problem in that idea? Any other crazy ideas?

by the way, I assume the jet for propulsion comes from the board tail (I see some sprinkler out of the tail, even airborne) but not sure. The don't show the foil but if the jet comes from the board tail it shoudn't be special besides having the right wing surface

Like your thinking MarcCRider once you are up and riding on a downwind run you won't need the motor. The motor will definitely be part of the fuselage at the rear (see pic below) .The sail drive system on yachts with a folding prop would be perfect once you are going.(see 2nd pic).

If you were on a downwind board it would be very easy to carry battery's for a 2 run time.

No just joking I actually think they could really be onto something here. You need to remember that this is just the very beginning and whilst the riding in this vid doesn't look amazing it won't be long before they have been adapted to riding in choppy open ocean conditions, carving, surfing and doing tricks. I could imagine this becoming its own recreational pursuit as opposed transport for another pursuit.

With the efficiency of the foil and using a large sup style board they should be able to carry enough battery power to make them a functional and fun mode of transport/ recreation. Just look at the popularity and the power of electric bikes- you could easily fit a similar battery in one of these and I imagine the foil would not need too much power to keep it moving. Standing on the board would give the rider the leverage to control the forward and aft pitch and the balance needed to take on swells and heavy chop And also make all sorts of carving, surfing and general shredding possible.

Under Western Australian marine laws ( can't say for certain for other states) these would be considered a registrable vessel ( any boat that has an engine or can be fitted with an engine other than a tender in WA must be registered) the operators of these crafts would be required to carry correct safety equipment and depending on the hp of the vessel also hold a skippers ticket. They would also be bound by marine laws relating to speed limits and safe distances from other water users such as swimmers and surfers. I imagine the government would class these as pwc's and regulate them in the same fashion. They could definitely be used in a dangerous manner if they got into the wrong hands but I don't think that will be an issue any time soon plus we already have the laws in place to deal with them.

Pretty bloody cool really and about the closest thing we've got to a hover-board so far

Super high performance motor and the the DHL Lift foil is one of the best in the world. I've known about this one for a while haven't actually seen it yet. That video was not supposed to be released (someone is in trouble , not you). GoPro are working with Nick on this one due to be released next month with a full professional video. Can't wait to see it in the flesh , it has an incredible run time.

I dont find the post by DJ about the scubajet, www.kickstarter.com/projects/496246404/scubajet-worlds-first-flexible-water-sports-jet-en

but this could be quite fun added to a foilboard, and safe from propeller injuries. I asked them, it cuts off automatically once out of the water:

Its a great idea!! maybe it would be better adding the scubajet directly on the end of the foil and not on the board directly. So you also can use the motor power if the board is flying.

I am thinking just putting one (or 2?) scubajet on finboxes under the hull of the foil board. This way, you will just fire them as an assist for take-off on non-breaking waves, (the start button is on a wireless remote that can be attached to the paddle) away from any surfer and shallow reefs, and they will cut off once airborne to rely on your pumping and the wave energy. The battery should then be able to last for a long session.

Or just strap it underneath the foil for learning sessions.
