now you've tried the 4'5, 5' 18", 5'5 is the 5' your go to board for prone? I'm trying to work out my ideal board.

I have gen 1 FD and ran with a 4'6 35L 22" for a good while but anything less than ideal conditions I wasted a lot of battery and it was too wide. I've been using a 5' 19.75" 40L which is a lot better and more efficient to get up and I don't mind the extra length. It's not perfect though as it's an older model with a wide tail and I'd rather sharper rails. I'm in the UK, around 80kg and considering a custom based on the same shape as you are riding. What dims do you reckon. I surf beach breaks, the odd small close to shore DW, I want it to be reactive but importantly easy on the battery and help with getting on smaller foils. I'm pretty experienced and have been prone fd for 18 months. Thanks

I prone on a JS Mister Bennetts 4'5 @29L and a custom Konrad Stryk 5'5 x 17 @55LThe Stryk undoubtedly paddles better but 90% of the time if I'm prone surfing I'm on the JS it's just a higher performance setup that provides me a lot more feel through my feet (the nature of mid-lengths is they are thick)I can get 10-12km of foil time out of a FDA+ standard battery on pretty small foilsThe mid-lengths are good and do serve a purpose but they don't come without sacrifices

So possibly a 5' 18" 40L would be 3" which would still be good I reckon.

I don't think I need 55L unless I was wanting to tackle significant DW prone.

If you want to flat water start for me at 88kg 5-0 x 18-1/4 x 47 litres is the limit on a performance surf foil the Code 980s I can do it on the Code 850s but it's a struggle . So for you I wouldn't go below those numbers . For best battery & pop up performance plus it still surfs amazing and good length to DW .

Yeah those wouldn't be bad dims to start with, I personally think if it is your "performance prone board" I'd still drop more litres but I'm one of the lucky ones that hasn't ever really had issues getting on foil with small gear 29L with code 720s is fine for me until my battery gets low and then I just need a wave to help chip the 55L gets up easier but again thats not worth it for me with the sacrifice in feel/performance. Having said that when I'm analogue proning or surfing a bay wave with a decent paddle out I go the bigger faster paddling board

I suffer from huge tides and less than ideal conditions. My 4'6 35L struggles in these conditions hence me trying the bigger board. In perfect conditions I could get a 15L board up but I rarely get that. I like having a one prone board setup ready to go. The compromise could be 5' 18' 30L

You really can remove volume out of the equation with Foildrive. As soon as you pull the trigger the board will come to the surface, getting up then dependant on length to get speed, and foil size as to how much speed is required. If you could slice your board in half, it would perform almost the same.

I swap between a 12lts and 32lts board and find little difference other than the 12lts has more rocker in the tail so takes slightly more time to get going. I'm 80kgs and the above is flat water conditions, no wave assist.

SP1100, I can go less but then I need to paddle a bit or use chop assist. This is on the plus system But the 1100 is really good on our bay conditions, small would be good if the swell was bigger. We definitely get bigger swell but wind driven so too strong to use FD.

The Spitfire is a pretty big foil. I'm a similar weight to you and I sacrifice a small board for a smaller foil. I would have no problem on a tiny board on that size foil. This is the fun of prone or sup foiling is you can tweak to your own preferences.

No I get it, my 5' board is 2.75" thick. My point was you can put a big foil on any small litre and small length board and get up with no problem. I personally prefer surfing smaller foils and sacrifice a smaller board to use them. If I had better conditions and not big tides to contend with different story.

Surface area is just as important as volume, I remember Bert Burger from Sunova saying in regard to surfing ,you only need enough volume to just float on the water, then surface area a is more important factor in how easy a board paddles onto a wave. It was in response to the trend for high volume shortboards at the time, and essentially just adding volume after a certain point does nothing.

I prefer to label myself as Fun Seeker when using Foil Drive ;) .. more waves, lengths of rides and fun in 18 months than a combined 25 yrs of bang average UK surf. The odd road trip to Aus, France, Morroco, canaries etc used to leave me frustrated as I'd realise what I'm missing. Now I don't care about trips as my local is an absolute skate park on tap.
