Here is a vid of a downwinder i did yesterday here on the Gold Coast, plan was to go from Currumbin to South Straddie and then just walk over the Island and then hope the wind was still strong enough to then DW in the Broadwater to where all the other crew were hanging out foiling. Like all good plans, things didn't quite go the way I wanted!!
Have a watch as I managed to film little bits in-between not trying to die

Thanks for posting Jacko. It is heartening to know the experts have tough days out as well. I have too many of those "It seemed like a good idea at the time" moments still.

Wow, looked like a wild one. Why did you have to prone paddle ? was the prone paddle into the wind? or too rough ,or the board a bit too small to stand on and paddle any distance.Southport bar would be a nightmare especially if the tide was running out.

I had to push hard to the side to get in, my plan was to stay wide and cut hard at the end which would have worked sweet if i had not stuffed up. Where i came down was crazy washy with 10ft swells in all directions, i could have stayed standing but it was easier and faster to prone side on to the wind plus i didnt want to miss the corner at Straddie as if i went any further i would have had to come in through the staddie shore break which is no fun at this size.

Yeah I like to push things a little and this was a good day to push just past the normal comfort zone. I sure did pay for it today though as i just spent 3 hours in the Optus shop getting Angie a new phone.

It's was fun while it was fun even if I was cutting the big fast bumps short just to be safe, actually crazy to see how fast it could have really been as for a lot of the run I felt like I was cutting 20-30 second a km off playing it safe.
I did break my gopro off on a tree doing the walk but I was lucky enough to find that. The funniest part was I would have lost my own phone if I hadn't dropped it 10minutes before leaving and smashed the screen.

Here are my splits for most of the session, my watch didn't record the prone part as I must have bumped the stop button

What happens if you fall off 3km out? Can you get back on another wave? Is that a paddle or a stick to hold up the camera?

Yeah it's a paddle so if you come down you can just chip back up onto another bump.

Solid, two phones and a substantial prone paddle - Good day on the water .

I know to some people this is one of those "see, this is why I do not want to DW" type stories, but honestly (and I think Jacko will agree), these moments, whilst at the time are frustrating as all hell, are actually what make DW soo good. It is the humbling reminder that any run can go south. Our skills, preparation and some of the time just luck play such a huge part of the journey, but when you get it all together, there truely is nothing out there that compares to Foil DW. The bad days just make the good days even better, and on the good days your sorest muscle is your smile ones .

Nice consistent splits. What size foil were you on.

This was on an 1100 wing. For sure the splits should have been 20 to 30 seconds quicker as what I was backing off from were the really fast bumps and there was a lot I was letting go.

You are right also this is really on the extreme side of DW foiling and 99.9% of the time conditions are so much more controllable but it is nice to step outside of the controlled world from time to time.

Thought I would try a different downwind run today and was also joined by Ben Tardrew and Mark Rennie, this I feel could be one of Australia's best downwind run's on its day. www.oneoceansportsaustralia.com/blog/2022/2/12/kingscliff-to-nobbies-foil-downwind
