I have also placed extra strap inserts to open more my stance compared to the "standard" of the feet on the stringer.
It helps tremendously on paddling strength and efficiency for takeoff on SUP foils, and a bit to make your shoulder face forward while foiling.

While foiling, you must get used to combined rock & rolling input to the board: pushing front feet down or up in turns will induce rolling as well as rocking. But you quickly get the hang of it. But I don't think it helps me while foiling, the gain for me is for the takeoff.

My feet have been like that since day one , check out my videos .

Stagger= more control, more power, especially strapless. You can't surf strapless...feet on center line. You would have no power over a wide front wing.

The need for a newbie to put feet on center, is the main reason newbies can't surf without straps....no leverage.

To get back to your original post "it may help me turn like him" Frankly, straps are much more important to carve aggressive turns with SUP foils than the feet placement.

Derek rides a sup that is prone foil size. lots of prone guys ripping as hard strapless.Not getting back into straps after I had a kite strap crash. One foot in one came out. Snapped PCL, MCL ripped off the bone and fractures above and below the knee. 12 months off the water and permanent loss of function. My mate dislocated his hip same way. Straps are fraught with danger especially with the added stress of the foil.

I think the blurry photo of Derek makes his stance look more off centre than it actually is but it definitely isn't straight down the centre line....The back foot strap on a JL is already over to the toe side rail if you're riding with your back foot square & as someone pointed out Derek's boards are very small so again it's exaggerated....

That more sketchy feel, is increased sensitivity due to more leverage. That feels good, to people with tons of foil experience. Think about this for a moment...how can you lean to heel side and turn a front wing 1 meter wide with feet on centerline? You cannot, without a strap to pull up on. But with stagger, its easy. To you that's sketchy, to me it feels great.

I am personally a centre-line advocate. Ideally IMO you want the input from your foot to act directly on the centreline of the board. This may mean your straps are off-centre to achieve this, but I find if you're off centre it limits how hard you can trim fore and aft without side input/turn/wobble. The faster I ride the more important I find it to be centre-line.

Derek rips to no end (so do you Piros), so not sure if it's something he just started with and got used to. I always suggest you stand centre-line if you can.

Hard turning is not a rail pressure thing IMO. You should be leading your foil into and out of turns. This is done with technique not pressure.

There is definitely crew ripping in the diamond stance, but I think I can ride harder and faster from the center.
