When laminating a longboard deck and cross graining the layers, is it best to have the bottom and top layer running the length of the board or cross grain??

Way beyond my expertise, but common sense and years of boat tinkering says majority of laminates grain along the board.
If nothing else would look short and fat the other way.
From memory, most of the boards I have, the exposed grain is along the board. But most are probably plywood anyway.
If doing 7 laminates, 4 along, 3 across etc.
