Seems to be out of stock online everywhere, has anybody built one themselves?If so, what did you build it from? Eg balsa core and glass/carbon over the top, with 2x screw inserts for rear stabilizer?

Though shipping to australia may be prohibitive.

I have been experimenting with building a flat stab, but not with a pedestal, just directly attached to fuselage. Works great for winging, but my first try surfing this weekend, i wasn't really happy with it....going to need some playing around with tuning.

Has anybody taped another hole on the fuse so that they can just screw a flat rear stabilizer straight on the fuse - without the need for the pedestal?

Putting holes in the $$$$ fuselage scares me. So a variation on that. I have been playing around with making GF wings for a while. I make a socket for the fuselage connection with fibreglass and mold release. Then build it up with more layers of fibreglass and carbon.

For the stab, I did the same socket, but attached the stab flat side down, with one screw hole into the GF fuselage, and then a second hole using a rivnut and 1/4" bolt. Seems to work well, though not as refined as the GF pedestal version. (and no bonus marks for aesthetics, I know)

Made a wooden one for a Gong (Similar to Gofoil fuse mounting style but different dimensions). Sorry for the poorly focussed photo.

CNC machined the wooden part in 2 halves. Clamped the 2 halves over the fuse and poured in Epoxy and microballoon mix for a exact fit. Sealed the wood with a coat of epoxy and job is done.

The stab is just race stab that was lying around.

I did both DIY mast base and pedestal (Blue Planet) using a rather complex, yet very effective method: CAD design, 3D printing, silicone molding and epoxy/CF composites. I can share some CAD files if you are interested.

This is what I was looking at doing - how many layers of glass/carbon did you need to have sufficient strength? How tight is the fitting on the fuse?

Just tap the fuselage. So so easy cheap and awesome. It also allows the stabs to be mounted either side and makes the fuse as short as you desire. I have 4 holes that takes it down to 54cm fuselage length depending on the front wing.

Do you use any glue or resin to stick the helicoils in place or do they stay in place without?

Yep I always use a heli coil. Easy to replace if you damage the thread.

Sorry. No I just whack them in to the tapped thread. Never had a problem.
The kits are a M6 kit from repco. $40.
