I grew up watching McHales Navy, top show. Would be interesting to know whether these are the original Packard aero engines.

There use to be one used as a Rottnest Island ferri. I think it was burn at the Barack St Jetty years ago, fowl play suspected?
The old man use to tell me you could buy the hulls for 50 quid after the war, alot where turned into house boats.

One of my favorites is this Swedish Boat. It would be awesome in the Whitsundays.

They bought it off the navy

There used to be one moored in Kirribilli at what used to be the North Sails loft, opposite the Sydney Flying Squadron. It had been all tarted up to be a floating gin palace and was still fitted with its twin Merlins, the poor schmuck that owned it couldn't afford to drive it anywhere at 22 gallons/hour fuel consumption.

They were part of the air farce for use as crash rescue boats.

Yep, there was one at RAAF WILLIAMTOWN (operating out of Nelsons Bay) into the 70s or 80s. A mate of mine drove it for awhile.

One used to be the ferry to Heron Island.

And Boyce had a HDV, similar, for years. Iron fastened, not meant to last long.

Cant remember the motors name USA made had a feeling it had Scott and B some thing its got two V 12 petrol engines and can cruise at 30 knots
think it uses a litre a minuet at idle each engine . Was told this is one of three and this is the last one still in operation in private hands the other two PT's are in USA.

There was one at Cerberus in '64. The one in the photo was probably for East Sale or Laverton.

I worked on an SAR (SEa Air Rescue) boat whe I was an apprentice at the Williamstown Dockyards in the early 70's. From memory, we replaced the stem and some planks and the motors were reconditioned. I think they were Rolls Royce aero motors. She was on the slip for a couple of years.
The Navy took her out for sea trials and when they were berthing the throttle linkage got stuck and they T-Boned the bluestone jetty. She spent another ^ months or so getting another new bow.
I don't know where she ended up but she sure was a great looking boat.

Packard engines, same as used in the P51's and other aircraft. Not sure whether the Australian ones had these or Merlins.

I don't think the PT boats ever used the (Packard/Merlin) aero engines . Just the name and the cylinder configuration is the same.

The Packard 4M- 2500 - PT Boat Engine
This engine was based on the 1925 Liberty aircraft engine

Cylinders: 12 - V angled arrangement
Supercharger: Gear driven - centrifugal
Cooling: Fresh water
Maximum RPM: 2400 rpm, 2000 rpm sustained
Rating: 1200, 1350, 1500 depending on year of manufacturing
Fuel: 100 Octane gasoline
Fuel Consumption at 40 knots: Top speed at 40 knots, running three engines, 474 gallons per hour
Full fuel load (3,000 gallons) 6.3 hours.
Fuel Consumption at 40 knots: Maximum sustained speed at 2000 rpm, running three engines, 292 gallons per hour
Full fuel load (3,000 gallons) 10.3 hours, range radius of 259 miles at 35 knots, 518 miles total.

The US Navy PT Boats never used the Packard Merlin engine as is often stated.

HG, that Higgins PT boat video seems to show monitoring gauges for 3 engines but I can only see two side-by-side, where would the third engine be, and would it be for propulsion?

The third engine was on the centreline and its thrust was aimed directly at the rudder, it was placed a bit over one engine length aft of the other two engines.
