Looking for some advice on a mast step repair I need to make . It has to be done







This is as far as I have got doing this repair I intend to weld some mountings for blocks just in case I ever want to run ropes back to the cockpit its a stainless steel plate 300mm square and Intend to mount my mast step into it with insulation between the two


So Far my intension is to remove the top layer so the stainless steel plate can sit flush on the deck and epoxy a surface for it then insulate and mount my Aluminum mast deck step.
At some stage of my boats life many years ago a yacht close by lost its mooring and took down my mizzen on thew way past
and also damaged the fiber glass deck when the main mast is located. Its had a repair but I'm not happy with it so I want to removed some of the layers and inspect and repair the fiberglass and make it a little stronger.
The top photo above you can make out a hair line crack between the mast step mounting holes

Any idea what's in the cockpit sole and if it's any good mate?

Its the main mast Brizzy


Right where the drill is resting

The mizzen is held by the main mast no forstay so when the Maverick boat that lost its mooring dropped the mizzen it pull the main mast backwards Id say
causing the old repair

It seems not all Walker H28s have the stay at masthead level between the main and mizzen mast. Given that the main mast has its backstays, I am thinking that the mizzen lowers might have enough strength without it. Is that connecting stay insulated perhaps as an antenna?

What is the opinion of the experts?

Ah I see. So...are you thinking you have to dig into the deck and investigate if things are damp/old in there or are you just working out a good fitting/way to step it?

No its holds the mizzen in position . The mast would stay there with out it but not very secure when I up date the rigging I replace the wire between the main and mizzen masts with spectra and add a block so its a little easier to drop the mizzen or detach the main mast

Walker H28s appeared to have two positions for mizzen stays. One arrangement required a triatic stay (stay between top mizzen and top main mast) in the other arrangement the shrouds for the mizzen are well forward of the mizzen leaving it independent of the mizzen. My boat (Walker build and finished) has a triatic stay and a boat near mine is a Walker but built after he sold the plugs to a company that made boats for DYI finish. The mizzen on this boat has the shrouds forward leaving the mizzen independent of the main mast - not requiring a traitic stay.
