If you do it after Lord Howe BBQ Rally, say late Nov, I would be interested in helping you bring her down. What self steering does she have? You could do it 2 handed with a furler and self steering.

What was Velona called originally? She didn't do a few Hobarts under that name.She seems to have been a great buy!

Chris 249: A good question about previous names. I've searched old race results, and also found nothing under Velona. I was told it got a 3rd in class in at least one Syd-Hobart. Kanga B would probably know it's history. Apparently he was in Airlie last year, and went on board to inspect one of "his". The original-looking switch board has 'Velona 1980' engraved. Would like to know if it did have another name(s).

She could be "Callala" (sp) which vague memory says could have been Kanga's own boat and the first one out. She did the 1980 Hobart. Chowringhee (1981 Hobart) may also have been a Jarkan. She could actually have been the old Callala, which I seem to recall had a white lower hull, with pale blue or grey tones above the rubbing strake. I'll check it up tomorrow if I remember.

Must have been dropped on my head as a baby....I can remember the entire IOR fleet, but not where my keys are.

Duncan, well done. After nearly 5 years of owning a Jarkan 10.5 it still puts a smile on my face each time I board the club tender to head out to our swing mooring @ Bayview. I was onboard yesterday with my youngest son, what an awesome day to be on Pittwater.

I often sail alone but couldn't do so without a furler. I can even use my MPS but for that I use the auto pilot.

I notice there are currently two Jarkans on the market, one at $68k and the other at around $30k (moored on Lane Cove River)

Chris: Yes, it used to be white. Up to 2006 it was based in Sydney. I'd be really interested to know more about its past...

WarrinaIII: There are 2 other Jarkans moored off Dawn Fraser Baths, Balmain - 'Uncle Jeffrey' and 'Solstice'. The $30K one you mentioned is an ex-charter boat moored in Woodford Bay - 'Balmoral Star', listed by Jonno. It was my first choice, but it simply needs too much. It's been on the market since Aug 2015. It needs: a new engine (seized Volvo), new running rigging, anchor and chain, windlass, possibly new sails, cooker, safety gear, instruments, batteries, etc. It also has a hydraulic in-mast furler which didn't thrill me too much.

Duncan your yacht could have been named "Different Drummer", which sailed in the Sydney to Noumea Race starting 23rd May 1981. She returned to Sydney (via a few days stop at Lord Howe Island) on 23rd June 1981.

Google "Different Drummer Jarkan" and you will find a Navy Newspaper (Royal Australian Navy News) with an article on this race (refer page 4). If she was "Different Drummer" then you should inspect your steering.

I cant believe the posts I am reading here. I was the lucky last to have a 10.5 built, with my 10.5 being number 53, she was named Timeless and was built at the same time as number 52 St Elmo's Fire. Built by Ken King and the team at Jarkan in South Nowra in 1991 both were launched in 1992. Earlier posts refer to the fire at the factory which damaged the deck mold, Ken rebuilt that mold and built a boat for himself and one for me. I can't remember all the names of those involved but Cyril laid the hulls and deck and the interior was finished to a high standard, something the 10.5 is well known for.

The posts also refer to the distinguishing differences between boats well it was the post by KaJa with the photo of THAT chart table that prompted me to write. Both St Elmo's Fire and Timeless had tall masts (1 metre extra) for better light wind performance, laminex chart table inserts if I remember both were of the old world map series, power distribution panels by SeaBoard, designed and built by Ken King.

I wonder what name is under the tag for the current name "Hina" do me a favor and have a look.

The following photos are of Timeless being moved out of the factory and on the truck bound for the launch at Husky.

Kanga is on the right of the photo with the kids (now in their 30's) in front.

My wife asked me to cull a lot of the paperwork I gad accumulated over the 25 years we have been at current home and in doing so I came across an add (3 pages printed in colour) by Craig White the owner (back then) of Velona.

Like her owner her hull was white and the 22 hp Kubota motor had a massive 84 hours.

Her asking price on 26/04/2007 was AU $85,000

Obviously I dfid buy it and it took us to July 2011 (another 4 years) to actually purchase one (Warrina III).

Hi again and thanks to Jason for contacting me regarding the last Jarkan 10.5 built. Both of the last boats "Timeless" and St Elmo's had the woodwork done by Al Jennings and this included the floor and chart table, which were unique to these two boats. As promised I have now included some photos of the boats under construction.

I was looking at this boat too when it was on the market in 2015. I remember he was aiming for around $30k but I didn't get a chance to look at her. I later bought a Trimaran in Nov 2015 in Hervey Bay (also doing a detour to Airlie Beach where I missed out on another yacht by minutes) and slowly sailed her back to Vic arriving Nov 2016! Long Story! Looks like our paths may have crossed either by road or sea at some stage! Anyway it sounds like you got yourself a bargain!

I have had a good look and a crawl over this boat.
It has been for sale for a long time and has been kept in great condition on the inside. Some amazing room on the inside for cruising. In the current market you might get a bargain.

Would anyone be able to advise how to run the symmetrical spinnaker lines. I have a pole, kite, halyard and uphaul. How is downhaul rigged. And sheets - where are rear blocks mounted.

So glad she's still about. She was named Sasu in line with "Jarkan" (Jarrah/Kanga) - I'm Sally and my sister was Susie, hence "Sasu".

I can't help with specs too much, but if you're after some older photos of her, I can probably help in the new year.

I did wonder about the name. We thought perhaps it stood for Saturday Sunday which is ok. It also apparently means in Japanese the act of wearing a sword!

She has brand new standing rigging now and whilst the mast was off all electrics replaced. Led lights, new wiring, new wind instrument (Raymarine). The navman stuff has just about reached its useful life with depth and speed missing bars on the lcd and autopilot screen browned out (still works just have to press the right button the right numbef of beeps). So electronics is going to be next. Any advice from forum members about electronics would be good.
