i have been told cry havoc is a write off !!
i dont have a cheque yet but to cheer myself up i am finding myself looking at boats.
if you know of a good one near you post up a link. I am thinking min 34ft to 40ft aft cockpit big volume cruising boat no more than $65000 max. Light and airie cabin to sleep 5/6. Draft is a prob here so no more than 1700 fin keel and i like a skeg hung rudder. I would appreciate your thoughts and opinions. cheers ian

A real pity for you but an opportunity you can really exploit in the current market.
North shore 38, S&S39, S&S36. For $65k you might not get a brilliant example but you should get a very good well equipped one. Any of these will take you over an ocean.
I particularly like the 36 after assisting another Seabreezer with one. Roomy for the length, comfortable and rock solid construction.

Lexmark has his S&S 36 for sale here in Bundaberg for $65,000 but she will have more than 1.7 metre draught I think.

There's a Adams on the hard at Yaringa also a couple of others yachts around the 40 ft mark for sale

There's a nice Adams on yacht hub in Tassie I think it's steel .also a very nice Dunc 37 for around 60k on gumtree I know the boat well.

Apparently there is an Adams 40 in timber/glass in Hobart with new EVERYTHING that has sat unused for a couple of years and he was down to $70K last I heard?

hi donk sydney adelaide would be about my limit am thinking anything older than mid 80s would be getting a bit old depending on the upgrades though.

There is a nice cav 37 for private sail near me fully worked heaps of gear but has a slight hull blistering problem not sure if that is a major problem

Yes AUS I know the owner and it's a very well built Dunc 37 its just meters from my current yacht. It's the sister ship to my last yacht raised deck aft cabin centre cockpit. That price would be very negotiable in my thoughts.

Looks OK to me, says standing rigging was replaced in 2010 and engine rebuilt too.

5,7 and I assume a lead keel mine was cast iron which was a pain.
really nice boat to sail the down side a smallish cockpit but capable of sitting 4 people.
i have some videos of her sailing in bass strait if you haven't already seen them. Fast dry cruising yacht.

That VDS 34 is an excellent choice if you are prepared to do what a steel yacht needs. Constant monitoring for rust and immediate repairs. It has been for sale for quite a while and if it has fallen out of usage be sure to do a very thorough survey. I would bargain heavily on the price.

Osmosis is not the death sentence it used to be thought of as long as it is not structural. My boat had it when I purchased it and I paid according. I have had it blasted back and recoated. This also removed the old bodgey repairs. Now it should be easily managed.

that vds cisco has a timber deck i am wondering if it may be glued and screwed to the steel could be a problem but its a nice boat. Iam leaning a bit at the moment to the cav 37 does any one have any experience with them. The beauty of these boats is they are very close to home

Owned a Northshore 370 and sailed on NS38 and NS33. Great boats, very well built Australian production boats, fast, comfortable. Good ones don't stay for sale very long, particularly the NS38, and the lines still look good today, timeless designs.

I have owned a Cavalier 37 for around 6 years.

we generally sail two up, me and the wife, in our mid 50's. We have added lazy jacks and auto pilot to make life easier. Reefing is from the cockpit.

Most of our use ranges from day sails to a couple of weeks on the boat. Local sailing and short coastal hops. We should have more time next year and hope to do longer trips then. We have had up to 6 adults and a coupe of kids on the boat for day sails. The boat handles this range of use well.

i love the boat. For me it is a great balance between performance and comfort, both sailing and at anchor.

You mentioned a 1.7 m draft, my cavalier draws 2 m, though I think they may have been built with different keel depths. When I bought mine I had a limit of 1.8 m and did not realise the boat was 2 m until we slipped her for the survey. By then I was pretty emotionally attached and decided bugger it, buy her anyway. I have never regretted the decision.

If it is timber over steel I would not touch it.

Considering your situation it is probably a good idea for you to step back a bit and be objective. The insurance company has not yet paid you out. If they do pay you out, how much or little will it be???? Do you really want to get back into another yacht??? If you do, do you want to replace equivalent or go up or down??

If you do get the $60 to 70k pay out you have a lot of options.

Good advice all round guys i need to step back take a breath i have always been full on get it done sort of guy so a time out will be hard but necessary.

I agree with Cisco, wait and see what the pay out is and then sit back and wait for something to come along. There is no shortage of excellent boats out there.
Also be prepared to travel for that quality boat. I personally would stick to the high end brands of the 70's and 80's and preferably a boat with history but that is just me. For a big boat something like this Kalik which does not meet your criteria would be on my shopping list. Why not have a look at the only Jarkan 10.5 that currently appears to be for sale "In Due Course" at Hastings Victoria?

Sorry Warrina III is not for sale. She is far too much fun and anyway we have over capitalised now as yachts a a bottomless pit and suck our Bank Accounts dry but the rewards far out way the pain.

Good luck with your search and yes the Cav 37's look great. The one for sale up here is still in local paper @ $58 K but the commentary on Seabreeze indicates it has a lot to be done.

Thanks for all the advise and well wishes i will miss my jarkan 10.5 cry havoc she was part of my life for the last 3 years and i had some great times on her.
She will be auctioned by pickles at some stage so if you want to bid and know how to properly fix her could still be a great boat for someone.
