I'm considering using epoxy on my rub rails as a base before vanishing
Has any one done this using bote cote
My rub rails are old and weathered

have you considered used timber oil instead ? just rub on every now and then when making love to your boat .

not as shiny but less work ....

Ive been oil it since Ive owned it but the teaks badly weathered Id like to deal with it a a few years time not right not.
Ive scrubbed it yesterday with wood cleaner and sanded it back some .
Today I sikaflexed the hull teak join Ill sand it some more in an hour or so. Just felt the epoxy might preserve the teak for a few more years. Its mainly the port side that must have taken the weather over the years on the swing mooring .
So in a way I need to turn a pigs ear into a silk purse

Trouble is if you make the rub rails hard with epoxy plus hard varnish, next time the rub rails are used for what they were intended - bumping into stuff, Means they will most likely crack the varnish and flake off.

Time will tell nods at the moment where I am, I find other seem to like to bump me.

If by epoxy you mean Wattyl Timber Preserver or Everdure (same thing, thinned epoxy), keep in mind they have no UV resistance.

If you have been oiling the teak I don't think the epoxy will take to it.

Sikkens products have a good reputation for that application as does Deks Olje.

Any oil based product should "feed" the timber and preserve it longer.

Bote coat epoxy has uv protection and also Ill be giving it many coats of vanish before its finished the rub rail is showing it ribs so to speak Cisco

Ill put at least three coats of epoxy before the vanish . Ive tired many things oiling Id like but with renovating the boat I don't get the time . and realy its to thin to sand any more as far as I am concerned so to me a few coats of epoxy might help keep it going . When it needs vanishing again I hope I only have to sand back to the epoxy

I love Deks Olje, easy to apply and re-apply. Easy to blend in if you scuff it. Just give it a another coat when it starts to look a bit dull.

HG -You may want to check the proposed systems of Bote Cote(or West) in more detail before you start.
I think you'll find that the epoxy base coats are in fact not UV protected,but it is the final water based type finish which protects the underlying clear epoxy from UV harm.

But seriously,being rub rails you should take Andy's advice and go for a product that's easy to refinish like Deks.
Afterall they will suffer chafe from time to time whether it be from fenders or when docking your yacht.

I use a lot of Cutek CD50 on timber building facades and decks.It's idiot proof and easy to refinish.
You simply put in a tint to colour as the plain will bleach off fairly quickly.
A word of warning,it may mess with your respiratory system as I believe the active ingrediant is Napthalene.
I have raised this point with the manufacturer and supplier,but they continue to avoid me.

What epoxy i had on there i sanded off
Cleaned and used Feast Watson Spar marine varnish < had it on the boat so Ill use it thanks for the advice




First coat lots more to do

The best material is nearly always the one you already have HG. Looks nice

Shoot!! I knew I was getting up there but was not keeping count. I suppose I have been on the forum for about 5 or 6 years now. I started out in the Land sailing section and had a lot of fun there and still visit occasionally but back then the Sailing Section was mostly populated by racing skiff types, was boring and had a lot of ego stuff going on.

The Sailing Section has morphed into something really good which tends to focus on yachts from 20 to 40 feet mostly and the "brains trust" is really tremendous.

It appears we have no specific moderator in our room and I do not recall any moderation having been done here which is a credit to all who come here, so give yourselves a pat on the back guys and gals.

Despite the anonymity of internet forums, quite a few of us have met up with fellow contributors from far afield.

Tomorrow I will be hooking up with nswsailor on his way around the island and be giving him a bit of logistical support and some Bundy hospitality. (We don't eat fancy too much at our place so dinner will be bangers and mash with peas, carrots, onion gravy and a rasher of bacon. )

Thanks for the congrats CR and may we meet on a beach one day per chance.

Agree, the information on offer around here can be astounding,most of which I suspect comes from the 'school of hard knocks'.
You cannot buy or get this sort of information from dealers or suppliers these days due to the ever present butt covering mindset.

It would be an interesting stat to figure out how much time and money has been saved to the forum members by having access to all of this.

I happened to be up your way recently Cisco collecting a load of QLD kauri and Crow's Ash timber. Unfortunately it was a fast turnaround trip of 2500klms in one weekend-No time for beers and cheers.

Most of my post are photos good and bad but hopefully some one enjoys looking . Don't know if they learn any thing about learning but . Some of the comments have helped me Thank you
