If you are in Scarborough, talk to a local boat club, such as the Moreton Bay Yacht Club
mbbc.org.au. A good, free, way to learn is to crew on other people's boats for afternoon racing, if they do it up there. It might not be as good as proper tuition, but you'll get the hands-on experience it sounds like you need to get started.
Incidentally, if the motor is more than 6HP (it would be for a 32 ft boat), you need to get a recreational boat licence. Also, if you have a VHF radio, you also need to get a radio licence, although the requirement for radio licences is poorly enforced. The clubs often hold weekend courses for both licences, and they provide a good opportunity to learn.
