Hi

i bought an old boat with a new engine, Yanmar 2ym15. The temperature gauge, VDO brand, does not work. The temp sender or switch is connected to this. There is also an alarm connected to the gauge.Does anyone know if this engine comes standard with a temperature switch (ie activates at 95C) or a temperature sender that can be connected to a gauge? The manual refers to a switch but the manual lacks any detail.

there is also what looks like a spare/unused wire/terminal on the engines control panel to connect the temperature switch or sender directly. I imagine this is to alarm through the control panel. The manual isn't too helpful.I just want to make sure I get the over temp alarm really.

if it's a switch then one option I have is to buy a new sender and install this so the gauge works and I imagine the alarm. Another option, if it is a switch, is to connect it to the engines control panel so I get the over temp alarm through this.
would the best way to test it all to drop the temperature sender in some hot cooking oil I heat up on the stove? This will confirm I get an alarm. Any advice welcome. Thanks Jack

give the Yanmar distributor at Coomera a ring, they are the australian distributor and have service parts stock, you'd be amazed what you can still get for your engines. Hope this helps

The spare wire on the control panel may be for the alarm for a sail drive water leak.

Have you looked at the watch dog type of temp gauge / alarm ?

No but looks like a good option. At this stage I'm going to swap the current switch/sensor with a sensor that matches the gauge.

I actually just installed one of these watch dog ones. By the time I bought the VFO sender, gauge and adapter this was comparable in price, way easier to install, digital and has an alarm. So far I am happy with it.

At the moment I have it installed on a bolt on the thermostat housing but I may move it elsewhere. Wonder if I could put it on a bolt on the exhaust manifold I also have one of those infra red temp gun things which I find super handy to have on my boat.

That's where I have mine & it works well - it's very close to matching the temp I get from a water sender.
