Hello all

Just wondered if anyone with a yacht around the 9-9.5m length and ~2.5t sailing displacement is using a Yamaha FT9.9GEL four stroke high thrust long shaft 3 bladed outboard and finds that it pushes the boat along acceptably - say to 6 or 7 knots in no wind no current? Appreciate advice.

Slightly smaller, but I had a Johnson Sailmaster 8hp, x-long leg, 3 blade high thrust prop - pushed my 26ft JOGer at 6-7knts easily, never more than 2/3rds throttle. Had a stator too, which was handy.

Great thanks Kankama, Azure and Crusty - really appreciated. It sounds like this will be a goer. Good tips about the rubber drive splined bush and spare prop. I am surprised that Yamaha don't have a 4 blade low pitch high blade area for the 9.9 size - as per here only 3 blade props albeit it is a high blade area design. Crusty are you aware of such a 4 blade prop for the 9.9? Appreciate advice of the finer pitch prop model you have as the spare. Thanks again in advance.

Gold. I got onto ozprops and they are sending a quote for the 10x5 4 blade. About 10 days delivery from US. Our motor is 2013 year done less than 50hrs. Many thanks.

Thanks for the confirmation Jeff. Yes certainly quiet - at idle it is so quiet I have to check it hadn't stalled.

your 9.9 pushes along at 6 knots , curious as what the 25hp pushes your boat speed up to?

Great idea crusty, the other way to go for temp alarm is the bolt on type engine guard / engine watch dog

Have the same motors, recently acquired and with a very limited sailing experience but good mechanical background decided to pull them up out the cat.
1st thing is these high thrust 9.9 tend to sit on cats (although not in the water as the leg can be pulled up in the scoops) for a long time without getting a fresh water flush or salt away etc. If you want to do a service and can lift the motor up for acres then I'd do the oil change with syringe from eBay as posted, new filter, plugs, pull carb with a 10mm watch for tiny o ring at back that holds the choke lever/plug leave connected if pos. Clean carb reassemble. Take off spark plug lead housing 2x 10mm to access the thermostat cover plate, don't just pull thermostat off, pull whole plate 7 or 8 10mm bolts from memory. Inside you'll find it completely gunged up with salt deposits, clean and check tiny anode inside plate is present. Pull thermostat carefully off gasket on this one. Boil water test thermostat then reassemble everything in reverse but with myolmar on the gaskets. There's numbers on cover player in order to tighten in correct order

Leg
2 x 10mm on the gear shift rod. These seize! Hence my knowledge with these. I snapped one and had to pull powered off to put a new one back in. One is just 10mm locking nut silver (Take note how many threads up it is, then undo)
The other is brass and there's a good chance it'll turn clockwise up but not all the way. You need to work it and use rp7 or something similar. If it's stuck get the blow torch on it for a mintue or 2 it will expand and u thread all the way up. Then once undone undo 4x12 mm on leg drop leg and follow danger on utube or anyone for a yammie impeller change.
