Hi all

As i mentioned in the Deheler thread i was wandering the marinas in Hobart yesterday and came across a Sailmaster with a modified skeg to support the bottom of the rudder and with the rear of the keel extended and tapered to a point

Wondering if any forum members have any thoughts









on both of these modifications

big job , expensive , may cause extra weird drag... water flow over rudder .

The skeg you have when you are not having a skeg. Looks good to me.

Id try and find the owner find why and who did it there is a chance khan may have
Perhaps it might be an early sail master Khan altered things along the way some times

The current owner said it was like it from new and that is a possability but because it is a thinner section than the skeg it looks like more of a add on than something done during production

He also said this was a Tassie built boat by the same company that built mine

Re the build year the owner said it was a 1986 (mine is a 1984) but it has a earlier series Yanmar (2QM15 where as mine is a 2GM) than mine so I am not sure that the year is correct if it is the original engine fitted

It could be the yacht builder was using up old stock by fitting the 2QM15 engine.

Nothing wrong with those little thumpers. I have one in my yacht and if they are caressed properly and sweet talked they will serve you well.

Not saying there is anything wrong with the 2QM but from what I found on the net the 2QM15 were produced from 1977 to 1980 so there is a fair difference in age

Ive heard a few say that Khan sold kit boats early 80's. Bare hulls plus .So it may have been added by the company that built yours or Khan

The original owner may have had the Yanmar sitting at home before he bought the boat or bought a good value second hand motor with low hours.

Personally I wouldn't entertain either of those rudder set-ups in the photos. Purely because both could (very easily) cause the rudder to be jammed causing possible damage & possibly a very dangerous situation, when you go over crab pots at night. The top one could be modified to allow the rope on the crab pot to glide past the lower pintle. I wouldn't contemplate a spade rudder at all, if doing any overnight coastal sailing.
